I just bout a 72 skylark for $900. After I changed the trans fluid I noticed a clunking soundand feel when I shift it in reverse... What's up?
u-joint could be bad but it sounds like there could be slack in the ring and pinion, just a guess though without looking at it
Sounds like the reverse wave plates were removed, assuming that trans has been rebuilt at some point, or something is up with the valvebody.
Yeah its comming from the front of the trans. The housing says C3 if that helps I'm sure it has been rebuilt at some point the dash has200,000
The engine idles real low. I will have to get an rpm gauge and let you all know. I just bought the "burner". 2 weeks ago and have done just trans oil. Motor oil, moble 1... cap and rotor, ac delco plugs Filter, and sea foam intake and carb. Rear diff fluid is next Don't get me wrong this beast runns like a champ. I have dusted off a lexus suv and a benz coupe:beer
Get under the car with it in Park, and grab a hold of the drive shaft. Try to twist it in each direction. If you can see any movement at all in either U Joint, they are bad and need to be changed
Will do Larry... btw where could I buy a brand new drive shaft. Something light weight. Ihave tried getting one rebuilt and it vibrated way worse than before
Any drive shaft shop can make you a new drive shaft. Look in the yellow pages. Fill out your profile. Your posts should include your location. Knowing your location can make it easier for someone looking to help you, make suggestions.
HUmmmm... I have the same problem with mine..Low idle, new u-joints,"rebuilt tranny",perfect mounts and a used rear that im not to sure about but seems to be very little play between the rears yolk to the axles.. Not trying to hi-jack.. Keep it going, want to know what you find.. ~Vin
Sorry tgank you for cheaching that. I meant to say 400 not 4k I had just gotten off work and was a little tired dude. So it being @ 400 is about right, huh?
If the tranny is a 350 it has what is called an "anti-clunk" spring. This is a spring steel piece that hooks into the side of the case and absorbs the shock when you shift from forward to reverse. There is always some play and this spring absorbs it. If the tranny was rebuilt sometimes they don't put them back in (bad idea) or it could have broken or dislodged during reassembly. Bad things is, it's all the way at the back. You have to take everything out to get to it. It's all the way back at the low and reverse clutch drum.
Ok, so I gues I need to start saying up for a trans... I don't plan on gettin this one rebuilt guys so scrach that. I really want a trans that will save gas on the highway and in the city. I need some thin that isn't going to require modification. I was thinking a 4 speed :idea2: I will buy one from summit racing What options do I have. Are there any 4 gear trans out there for my situation? I want a TCI or B&M trans. Does anyone know of any other great name brands?
