A friend of mine is trying to find a shift kit for his '65 GS with an ST300 trans (behind the original nailhead). Does anyone offer shift kits for these?

    :Do No:

    Thanks in advance,
    Kevin

Probably not, but there isn't really anything that special about most shift kits. Change a spring here or there, drill out a passage here or there. I'm sure someone familiar with that trans could make their own. Bet you Mark DeConti (dcm422)would know. I'll try to e-mail him.

I seem to remember having one of these transmissions in '66 Pontiac. I think I used a shift kit for a Powerglide, or at least some of the parts from one and it worked fine. I think there were some "tricks" but I don't remember the details any more. I think I got the kit from Fairbanks -- if they are still around....

I e-mailed Mark, and this was his response:
    Hi Larry,
Have to look around for what I have, but there has never been a shift kit for a ST300. There was a magazine article called "Blueprinting Buicks for Action" from 1966 that showed what hole to drill out in the VB plate to firm up the upshift. I know I have it somewhere, but if you have (or know where to get) the article it will give the hole and size to drill it. Other than that, not much else you can do to that trans.
Hope all is well, and I plan to be there on March 30.
    Take Care,
    Mark

    Kevin,

I have some information on how to upgrade the 300 ST. I will look for it. I totally change everything inside the one that came with my 1967 Calif GS. It worked great when I was done. I have since installed a 700+ HP 535CI and need to add a built 400 ST. I located new parts (hard to find) and changed all the gears, bearings, thrust washers, solenoids and upgraded all clutches and plates. I got the information on where to drill the plate and what size (race or street), and where to add specific springs from and old transmission guy that had some neat old document that I copied. Call me at (760) 535-5152 and give me a fax number and I will send it to you. Any intrest in my trans or new parts for the 300? I have collected a lot of stuff for a '67 A body over time.

Thanks for the great feedback. I can't believe how much I've learned about the ST300 in such a short time.

I'm not sure how far (or if) my friend will get into his trans, but there's sure enough info here to get him on track. Thanks again everybody for the help!
