When starting my engine there's a definite grinding noise when it's turning over. Is this a symptom of a starter that needs to be shimmed? I haven't gotten under the car to check the clearance between the starter gear and flexplate. If it needs more clearance, what is the best thing to use to shim? Thanks.
Shimming does not have to be a trial and error process. See http://bangshift.com/blog/basic-tech-video-how-to-shim-a-gm-starter-for-proper-fitment.html Devon
Ha, my favorite site =P Start shims are available in the "Help" sections of most parts stores. Usually starters come with a set of shims and a rod. I don't know the rod's exact diameter, but the video shows a paper clip being used, so that is probably sufficient.
Thanks very much for the info. I'll have to get under the car, as soon as my back quits hurting from the last time I was under there. Hope the flexplate teeth aren't chewed up. ray:
I'm not a mechanic, but I've messed around with old cars since I was a teenager, and until recently I'd never even heard of shimming a starter.
