Should I Go (Correct) Black?

I'm getting some work done on my GSX to finish a bunch of "wish list" items before the GSX Reunion. My car currently has older nice quality paint but the entire car is clear coated and buffed for a gloss finish.

Obviously this is incorrect for a "stock" GSX. I am torn by what to do...

I want to be able to enjoy the car and keep it clean but also DRIVE the car on nice weather days and be a regular at local events in Florida. This would mean driving the car within a few hours to attend events.

I've also been given advice that the car reaches a certain point where you no longer enjoy driving it because it is too nice. I don't want to be that type of enthusiast.

    1) Leave it Alone! The gloss black looks good and it is VERY easy to clean and detail the car. This is especially true since there is no need to worry about accidentally "shining" the black when detailing the car.

    2) Have the black masked and re-sprayed to be the correct satin finish. It would look correct and be true to original but also make it more delicate and challenging to keep the BLACK color the correct sheen when cleaning and detailing.

In Florida there are BUGS and they do tend to smash themselves onto the front of my cars especially. This means cleaning them off the paint is an ongoing task. Not a terrible problem but I do keep some spray detailer and a Microfiber in the car to deal with a quick cleaning as needed.

So, what are the thoughtful comments from all of you fellow Buick enthusiasts? Help me decide!

    Rob,
There is no one that can deny that I am an originality nut, however my "driver" X-Camino has gloss black stripes. If you want to drive your car and enjoy it then you may as well keep them gloss black otherwise after a while they will need touched up.

If you are not willing to do this from time to time there is no reason to repaint the stripes.

I agree, just cruise, enjoy and keep wiping and detailing.:beer

Unless your going for concourse who cares? So long as you love it and enjoy it!:3gears:

I think re-clearing the stripes in Satin would make them no harder to take care of....

To me if you were going to paint it I would go with the stock paint, but since it is done and you want to enjoy the car I would leave well enough alone if you like it. Why re do something that you like. It could be done later if you for some reason want to bring it back to exact stock.

Marks rite it wouldn't be any harder to take care of.Satin clear has come along way it use to milk out it's alot more durable.I hope you don't get to upset when you see your high school GSX.It's not going to be to correct,But it's going to sound good and run good. I'm tired of trying to get ever part just rite it takes the fun out of it.I hope i have time to drive around before the reunion I don't want to tralier it.

We have one with gloss and the other (the 71) is matte, or satin if you prefer. The matte finish car waxes once a year just like the gloss car since we keep them garaged and covered. I have yet to see any change in the matte toward being shinier than when first painted. If they are done right you shouldn't have a problem.

I can see where my post may be a bit confusing.

I am NOT going to repaint the entire car. The current paint is very nice and done in BC/CC. The idea is to mask off the black stripes and then properly prep the black areas and spray a Satin Clear onto the black stipe areas.

So, it's a respray of the clear over the black for the correct Satin finish. I do like the comments that the NEW SATIN CLEARS are straight forward to care for and keep clean. As long as it doesn't shine up when detailing I am inclined to have it done.
