Should this shifter bracket look like this?

  1. Should this 68 shifter bracket look like this?

This is the piece of a 68 auto floor shift that the handle bolts onto. As you can see, it is either twisted, or is it supposed to be like this? You can see the right side does not lay flat on the table, while the left side is. That right end of the bracket is 1/4" off the table. I'm wondering if I ought to put it in a vise and straighten it some. Does someone know how this should be?

Dave - If you dont get an ans. today I'll climb in the rafters and fetch one - only problem being I cant guarantee its a 68/69.

    .....it should be though

  4. Thanks Alan, if you get a chance to. It LOOKS like it was made that way, but who knows? Seems strange. Also, when the shifter is all assembled, the "trigger" doesn't seem to engage as much of the gear selector slots as it should, and I'm thinking this could be the reason, possibly.

Just looked at the 68 shifter in the garage. The piece should lie flat. Try to straighten it.

  6. I took it to work with me this morning, and straightened it out at the end of the day. As heavy gauge as the steel is, I would be surprised if it was twisted due to driver abuse. Maybe Dave (the seller) had problems removing it from the car it came from... :Do No:

I'll reassemble tonight, and see if the "trigger" engages the bracket detents better now.
