I just saw my first Smart Fortwo on the freeway on Thursday. He was going about 50mph in a 65mph zone. When I passed him he was gripping the steering wheel like he was about to lose control (I dunno, it was pretty windy out). Today I saw another Smart going past my house. Anybody else see them? I don't really have anything negative to say about them. They just look really fragile to me. I guess I'm just bored and didn't have anything else to type.o No: -MARK
I hear they have a pretty stout cage built into them. I can't imagine the gov't would allow them unless they were adequate.
Yeah, I just watched a video on YouTube from Motorweek. It looks like they put a lot of thought into safety. 70hp 0-60 =12.2 sec 1/4 18.5 sec @ 76mph
They're EVERYWHERE in London and I saw a lot of them in Paris, and Rome. In Rome I saw a lot of 60's and 70's mini cars too. I'm not sure what the price retail is going to settle at here once they're brought in from the manufacturer (I'm not talking about these small companies that bring them over for $20K+), but when I was in London and Paris in 2006 I did a conversion and they were selling from around $12,000.
Right now they're selling from $11k - $16k! And they still only get 35mpg. They're a perfect crowded city car, though. And that is what they are made for.
And that's where I was seeing them... in crowded cities! They can actually park sideways in a parallel spot. You can fit two of them in a spot for one car.
I first saw them in Germany and have driven them. They're pretty cool to drive, and as far as safety goes a very well made car. I had it going at around 85 (slow) on the autobahn. They have a Smart for four, and a sportscoupe as well.
Just saw my first one yesterday. My initial reaction was "Holy crap - I could park that thing in the box of my pickup!"
One of my customers has one and he LOVES it! He claims he gets 40mpg around town. You can take it on the expressway, but he doesn't recommend that. A perfect "Around town" vehicle. The owner stands at least 6'6" tall and he says he has plenty of room. It reminds me of an egg on wheels. This is something I would get for my wife as all her travels are in and around home and no exressway travel.

We got one and put it in the trunk of my spouse's 70 GS convert. The fit was snug but no problem once we removed the spare tire.
I dunno, they have been here for a couple of years and while they may claim to have designed safety into them, I don't think I'd want to get hit in one.
Anybody put nitrous on one yet? Somebody will. Remember those bar stool go karts a few years back? There was a guy at NMCA that put nitrous on one of them.
Here in the Netherlands the ForTwo goes from 8,795 / US$ 13,042 to 20,055 / US$ 29,741 for the diesel convertible version :TU: And for 29,000 / US$ 42,986 you can buy the Brabus convertible Xclusive edition.......
I'd rather put in a 300 horse turbo motorcycle motor. You see, it's still a grenade waiting to go off, but then you've got stupid power all the time instead of just when you hit the button.
