New Old Stock Soundstream D'Artagnan 5.1

I know this is not the best place these audiofile posts but I will anyway because I respect the option of my Buick buddies. I think I will seal the deal on the new old stock Soundstream D'Artagnan 5.1 for $400.00. Looks to be a very nice unit and looks to have the features I'm looking for, AL.

Rich, Cool :bglasses: ! I've been using a Tisumi 6 channel and the Soundstream would be a major step up. SQ is a biggie to me and from reaing your post and doing my home work I think this was a move in the right direction, Thanks AL.

    Al,
I'm not sure the deal with soundstream, but could you just contact them and ask for a spec sheet and manual for the amp? :Do No: Just a thought.

    Soundstream Help

Soundsteam has change hands and is made over seas now. I did contact them and they were not very helpful. I may just get rid of this one if I can't get any help, thanks any way. It's a shame because it's new in the box, AL.

What kind of problems are you having?

I'm having a little trouble understanding how tho have the switches set to use this amplifier like I want. I have a Alpine CDA-7878 that has 6-4 volt outs. Channel 1 and 2 are front, 3 and 4 are rear and 5 and 6 are sub outputs. The amplifier shows 5 and 6 as center and sub channel inputs. The amplifier I'm removing has 5 and 6 as both sub channels. So in short I would like to use the new amplifier like the old one but don't know what position the flip switches should be in and then figure out the sub wiring because it is a daul voice coil. I may look in to bridging 5 and 6, AL.

The "BIO" function will just supply any additional amplifiers with the headunits signal, although that signal will only come through whatever is playing on channels one and two, since the signal comes the front channels.

If you wanted a 10 speaker sound system in your car, you would use the BIO for a slave amplifier as the manual calls it. I don't think you will be using this feature.

If your headunit has six preamp outs, with a right and left for subwoofer, you will need to convert those signals to one RCA jack if you want to use the subwoofer and center on the amp. If the head unit does not have a center channel output, I don't know how you would go about using that unless you split the signal from one of the other channels, which would only give you left or right. The subwoofer has to be using the a low pass crossover to filter out the mid and high range garbage. That would make the center channel play notes below say 50hz, which is pointless as you already have a heavy bass driver. The center and subwoofer are mono. The subwoofer would be converted to "mono". I guess you could split the single RCA and run one to the channel 5 and one to the sub, but I don't think you plan on using the center, and I don't know if that would work or not.

21 should be switched to 6
22 should be switched to 1&2
23 should be switched to 3&4

For the crossovers, you need to decide what the frequency range is for your mid and treble speakers and then rotate the dials for channels 1&2 and 3&4 to that desired frequency. It looks like the sub channel always has the crossover engaged, so I would move that down to maybe 50 or 60 hz, depending on the range and power of the sub.

25 and 26 would, for example would be set much higher than the woofer, that is, if you wanted the channels 1-4 to play higher notes without the low bass notes. If you want your sub to play only the low low notes set it down low, then you would set channels 1-4 for mid bass and treble.

    I emailed you as well,

Mike, thanks for your follow up! What do you think of using channel 5 for the other sub channel and bridging the 5 and 6 on the amplifiers output? AL.

    Al,

I'm thinking of how it would work using the 5 and 6 bridged. I think you would have to use the channel 5 input (feed it an RCA cable, I mean) to be getting any sound out of the channel 5 speaker terminals.

Channels 1-5 show that they are used for a normal full-range speaker, and have high-pass crossovers that you would use for each one. It doesn't look like there is a "full-range" position for these, but it doesn't matter since you have a full range of speakers for your car. Channel 6 looks as though the crossover is always activated, since there is no corresponding switch, (if it did it would be near numbers 24-26). You would need to keep channel 5's crossover at the same position as channel 6 crossover, so 50 hz at the least. I don't know what would happen if you kept channel 6 at 40hz and channel 5 at 50hz. If you were using 5 and 6 as a left and right, you might be getting lower bass on one side than the other. I'll have to think about that.

If you wanted to bridge the output between 5 and 6, I'm pretty sure channel 5 will need an RCA input.

I have to think about this....

If, instead of splitting the connection out of the headunit, just run the red and white RCA cables to 5 and 6, that will treat one as left and one as right, which will still give you full subwoofer control out of the headunit and will give input for both channels 5 and 6. That might work. However, there might be some sort of internal protection against using 5, or any of the other terminals for subwoofers, but many amplifiers will allow both. You have the technology.

Do you have the specs on the amplifier? What is the actual RMS power output, what kind of subwoofer would you be using? If they are 4 ohm RMS power outputs, can the amp or subwoofer handle a 2 ohm load?

    Zapco AG 650.6

After all this I think I found the amplifier that I will be happy with and its a Zapco AG 650.6, this is a full 6 channel high end work of art, AL.
