how hard is it to install the components from a sp trans into my regular one? i only want what would be needed to make it run an sp converter.
It's not too bad if you're fairly comfortable with getting into the front of the transmission a bit. Here's some info: http://buickperformance.com/switchpitch.htm http://www.bdub.net/tranny/index.html A lot of people forget about the orifice plug in the front of the case behind the pump...it's a must. Seach the forums here for lots more good stuff...here's one good thread of many I turned up: http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?p=514982 Devon
looks like more fun than i want to tackle right now! i wish i new of someone in town or close by who i could trust to install that stuff for me. most people i talk to just look at me like ive been smokin crack
whats a good book to use as a guide to convert my stock 400 into a sp400? i can follow tech manuals pretty well so it doesnt have to be for first timers or anything but i would really like to convert my trans to an sp unit and i just dont know where to get a good book
Curtis, I believe Joe Naab (nailheadina67) authored a really great thread when he rebuilt his SP. Search around, it was in this forum not more than 6 months back, I think. To convert, all that needs to be done, is to replace the front pump, and input shaft, and wire it. There is also an orifice plug that goes in the hole (red dot) in the case. dcm422 (Mark DeConti) can help you if you have any questions. Find that thread though. Best book I've seen on the THM400 is by Ron Sessions, How to Work with and Modify the Turbo Hydramatic 400 Transmission.
