GM actually kept a staff of contortionists to install and remove these. As far as I can tell the easiest way to remove the speedo cable is to: Raise the car 18" off the ground. Open the driver door. Sit outside next to the car so you can see the steering column and support bracket. Break your arm at the midpoint of the forearm. You can now *just* fit around the steering column and support bracket.
I wiggled around for about 45 minutes until I took the wheel off and loosened up the plastic inner fender to squeeze the sucker through. Just alot going on in that area on those turbo cars and even with the wiring harness power brake booster and windhield wipers, it is still a pain. :3gears:
What do you need to do to prevent this? Take the speedo off and put some type of grease down the tube.
Axle bearing grease works and they even make speedo cable grease too. Over on turbobuick.com I found a whole bunch of info on this topic. Like our speedo cables are two pieces. They connect at/around the master cylinder. My bottom cable failed due to a lack of lubrication. When I pulled it apart there was all kinds of dried grease in the cable and my top and bottom cable's connectors where gualded together. So I'm going to head up to Auto Zone and see if I can get a one piece cable that will fit the entire length. :3gears:
