A 1966 Right Hand Drive Sportwagon (400)! I couldn't believe my eyes when I first saw it. It was spotted at the local cruise we have once a month in the summer. I couldn't resist the photo opportunity so I pulled the Electra up beside it for some comparison shots. No doubt about it. Style oozing onto the asphalt by the cubic inch. Fully Converted Dashboard must be cut into tiny pieces and re-assembled in mirror image. Not a small task. A photo from the "Driver's" side. Hehe...I love trippin' you guys out. A very rare sight. A right Hand drive 1966 Electra and a 1966 Sportwagon, in one spot which is half a world away from where they were born. At least they seem to be in good hands. From any angle... While you're mouths are open... here's an immaculate 1966 Right Hand Drive Riviera. Check out some of this other action... No shortage of fine 'rods in Adelaide. The scene stretches across the car park and in all directions with the classic "Burger King" (Known as Hungry Jacks in Adelaide - don't ask me why) fluro lighting providing a perfect backdrop. More of the same. I love these scenes. Don't forget to check the backgrounds for cool hoods, rooflines and large chrome bumpers. I'm not into Mopars but I'm betting that a imaculately restored 1972 Super Bee is a desirable car. An iresistable photo opportunity. We have our own 55,56,57 Chevy car club (remember, we like all muscle cars down here, no brand snobbery here) How about a pair of 440 'cudas parked next to each other? One is fair enough but what are the chances of two in one town in Australia, let alone parked next to each other. The orange one is right hand drive and the black one is left hand drive. Neat eh? Variety, variety, variety. We've got it all. ...told ya we had it all. LPG powered Big Block Chevy with intake tubes being fed by dual converters. It sounded unbelievable...especially for a bus. This thing was jumping around the car park like it was itching to do a wheelstand! Yes siree Bob. Proud as punch of the collection of amazing automobiles I see cruising regularly around here. Adelaide, South Australia. Arguably the Muscle Car capital of the southern hemisphere?
Nice, but look at that guy that parked it TWO SPOTS!!! I hate that! "look man, I want to hit your car with my door about as much as you want me too!"
Well, if any of you make it to Adelaide, I'll pick you up in the Electra and give you the tour. Lots of good driving down here.
When you think you've seen it all! Bill did you get to talk to the owner of the Sport Wagon? It's an impressive picture with both of your cars. Enjoy your summer, we're getting 12" to 17" of snow today @ 5 degrees F. Good to hear from you. :Comp:
I remember seeing a right hand drive 1973 Boattail when I was living in St. Kilda, Vic. That's when I decided I wanted a Buick :TU: No need for dual converters, but maybe he was going the cheap way and was using converters for smaller engines ? I'm running a single American made OHG X-1 converter, works fine for my 468 CI Boattail :3gears:
You know Doug, I waited for as long as I could for the owner to come back and they never showed. The cruisers had already departed and I didn't want to miss the road scene. The best part of these "cruises" is when you are all driving together down the road. It's like Muscle/Classic/Hotrod heaven all rolled into one. All the best automotive eras are happening at the same time, right now, all around. You get and keep the feeling that this is something special. Shiny glass, paint and chrome, rumbling exhausts, warm nights and not a "normal" car to be seen anywhere. Not that you're looking for one. There are sometimes hundreds of all manner of cool cars driving down a three lane suburban highway all at once. Usually at Dusk. People stand lining the road holding ice cream cones (don't ask me why but we always see people holding ice cream cones and waving), older kids make the spinning motion with the hands and you know what they mean. What they don't know is that you wish you had a car that could spin the wheels and take off...from normal road speed but they are blissfully unaware of how much cooler your car could be. They only see how cool it already is. Can't help but smile and bang a short horn blast, perhaps two. I'm sure that you folks get lots of that in many parts of the US but are they usually a "type" of car? Heaps of Buicks, 'Rods, lot's of Corvettes, or Sleds, Restored Classics and Cobras and stuff but I'm sure that if you could see this eclectic collection of fine US Automotive Performance Art you'd agree that we have some fine examples of everything cool and great in Automotive history in these parts, cruising all at once with only one thing in common - the unbreakable love of American Automotive Performance Art and Engineering - to bind us. "Slightly too much of everything please."..."You got it Jack". It's good to be back.
Love it Bill! Your right, my mouth was open in amazement! Great shots! I especially like that orange 44 Cuda that had a right hand drive set-up. No doubt HUGE BUCKS if it was ever sold in the states!
Bill, As always I love them Aussie cruise shots. Especially the interior shots. Although I drive a right hand drive vehicle nearly every day, I still like seeing them! That Sporty is SWEET. I also really dig the RHD Hudson. Anyway, last I heard you had to part with the Electra. It appears you have it back! Excellent!!!!
Bill, Good to have you back! and good to see you have gotten your Electra back too!! That SportWagon was a 1967 or a 66 with a 67 front clip on it, very cool though!
....they weren't called Electra 225 for nuttin' - 224.8" of LuxoBarge I only have '69 specs - a Sporty was 214" long
1966 model year Electra was only 223.4 inches long (just like my 1973 Riviera), nothing like the mid seventies Electras (233.4 inches for model year 1975 !!!!) 1966 model year Sport Wagon was 209 inches :Smarty:
Left-hand drive...Right-hand drive...How do you guys down under know which side of the road to drive on?   Great Pictures!!! :TU:
