First, I'd ck the r/e you bought. All 400 powered '72 GTO's came with Pontiac 8.2 10 bolts, not the '71-72 8.5 A-body rears. 8.5 posi Spider gear/side gears... The oem 28 spline S spring 8.5 posi carriers used their own style spider gears ( & are long disco'ed from GM). Ones out of same era pegleg 28 spline 8.5 carriers can be made to work. The side gears for these S spring posi carriers are very expensive new (GM). So expensive, it often makes no sense to buy S spring posis with poor condition side gears. Unless your posi side gears shows heavy wear or spalling (deep pitting), the side gears will not need replacing. Whether swapping spyder gears or just replacing the clutchs's, for best posi performance, the side gears will need to be reshimmed. Usually a few thousands thicker shim stack is all that is needed. GM long ago discontinued all the side gear shims. Ratech & several others sell side gear shim kits, but one cannot always get the right clearance with them. For help in setting propper side gear to spider gear tollerances, ck most any '72-80 GM service manual. Good luck. :3gears: Roger
1972 gto rearend? i am sure this is not a 8.2 and it is a 8.5. the housing was out of a 72gto, not sure if it was a 400. i got it it had a 350 in it. am i just better to run a eaton or a detroit locker in it and sell the gm posi.??thanks for the help
8.2 or 8.5 10 bolt Can you provide roger and I with some pictures of that 10 bolt under the pontiac you have? Thanks. Then we can make sure it is what it is. Do you think that rear was original to the car? Or do you think the car might ahve had some work done to it . Very possible the origianl blew up and someone stuck this rear 1971 1972 buick cutlas rear under it. Jim
Rear Repair I had a center-section repaired by Ray Motyka in Wilkes Barre, PA. I think this phone # is still good, call evenings; 570-822-1386. Diver
