What purpose does it do?? and will it slow down the junk Email that I get everyday?

Junk email can only be solved by not subscribing to anything.

But, try Spybot S&D and ADAWARE. Both i used every few days. You'll be supised the first time you use it you'll get hundreds. Norton software is also a good brand for viruses. Whatever you do, don't get Mcafee. It doesnt work and has many problems/flaws. :Dou: Goodluck

Those are the 2 I use daily on all my client's PCs.

I also use Hijack This (BE CAREFUL WITH THIS).

If you ever installed Kazaa, then download Kazaabegone and run it!

IMPORTANT!!! If you have Windows XP, let me know! You DON'T want to run SpyBot or Adaware until I send you a small file. MANY times when you pull spyware off of an XP machine it blows you off the internet. If that should happen, then running a little program I have will fix it right up.

Or you can do a search on Windows XP IP Stack Fix, and you should be able to find the program I use.

DON'T pull off spyware unless you first have this program saved on to your harddrive!!!!!!!!!!!!

As far as spyware goes it can range from annoying pop-ups to really invasive and damaging.

Spybot and Adware seem to work really well, I use them all the time. I also use McAffe Spam killer and it blocks about 75% of my junk e-mail. I also use a program called "check it 86" which was a free download from my internet provider and it has taken care of all of my pop-ups!

If you keep anything important on your computer it's always best to back important info up on a regular basis and use some trusted programs to keep your PC running properly.

I use a personal firewall and a firewall on my router and I still get crap from time to time. An unprotected PC is usually one headed for problems.

    Sorry to preach, Good luck!

Thanks for the links. Downloaded those programs and deleted 79 "problems".

Maybe that will speed things up.

    Mike (and others),

Check out this "shootout" of the top 10 anti-spyware programs. SpySweeper came out on top.

Recently got Spy Hunter for my sister's computer....works great!!:TU: :bglasses:

The free Ad-aware spyware program was quite good.....especially since it's free. Spy Hunter is MUCH better though.

Them spy ware programs do much more then they say. They will change windows settings and disable software its doesn't like. Read everything carefully.

I tried one that AT&T was giving out called spysweep and it did more things I hated then it helped.

It turned back on windows restore to full disk use, changed my swap file setting the same and disabled an old version of clonecd I used.

i was very upset when I could not install programs, as it kept saying I was out of space when I had 2 gigs free. I thought I did.

sometimes software changes and older version do more for free than the new one.Well they don't like that and pay these spy ware program people into putting in checks for stuff like that to disable it.

Oh and yes a firewall is a must these days. Everyone should use one. I use zone alarm.

Here's my solution (that I use myself). Adaware, updated constantly. A backup copy of the hosts file. Norton AV2001 (it works and doesn't bug the crap out of me). Regrun (to keep those pesky startup programs away). Netscape (set the option to "block popups" in the advanced preferences), this has kept my computer 99% "crap free" for the past 5 months. Don't use IE, spyware developers make their crap *for* IE, throw 'em a curveball! I don't think I could live without tabbed browsing as well.

cray1801 Too much is just right.

Do not under any circumstances use SpyDeleter, unless you want to loose control of your surfing abilities, I'm still pissed!

Check out the following site www.cexx.org. I use it all the time when I get highjacked by adware and spyware. There is also a message board for you to post questions and their response time is around 24 hours. I have had great results and I'm a network admin................go figure!!!!

    yeah

I started using spyware stormer, seems to be OK. You can also check your own cookies under documents and settings file. Also go to TEMP and see if anything looks funny.

I go to task manager - processes - during start up and kill anything suspicious. But they pop back up. Those *^$#&^(*) programs will hijack your machine! I can't seem to delete them either, using control panel or DOS. Man:af: !

Anybody know how to find and kill the pop up programs? I am using Norton, so its not a virus....

also if you ever indulge in any kazaa like activity you might want to get peerguardian.. you would be amazed at who is probing your computer all the time. Its certainly not bullet proof but adds just one more layer of security. The only issue with it is that sometimes it kind of goes crazy and seems to hog the cpu for a while which of course is not to good. I just turn it on if I am using kazaa...

Don't use kazaa, use kazaa lite (oldversion.com). It puts ALOT of ad-servers (where the adware comes from) in your hosts file, which blocks you from accessing the ad-servers, plus it doesn't have the spyware that kazaa has.

I use crazybrowser.com Its a shell program for IE and it blocks pop ups. 1300 so far. Its real nice as all the windows stay in one window with movable tabs. You can lock tabs or undo closes.
It has the middle button click that auto open a URL in the back ground and other really neat things.

If your having problems with programs you can't delete from start up you need Xsetup. Its a super handy program that I use mainly just to disable and delete program from starting up.

It will also do lots of powerful things. It has a wizard mode but default UI mode is better.

    http://www.x-setup.net/

    iespell.com is also neat.
it lets you spell check any place you can type.

I use Spybot as well, but I also have my computer set to prompt me when a first party or third party cookie pops up. Now, 99% of the time spybot doesnt find anything wrong. No more tracking cookies!

Everyone should definitely ditch Internet Explorer. There are so many security holes it's unbelieveable. On my Dell I use Firefox as my web browser, and I also run Adaware. Even doing so, somehow stuff still creeps through.

Or you could just get one of these: (I have the machine, but not the sweet monitor):
