Hello, all. I am a first time Buick owner as of last Monday. I bought a 1967 Buick Wildcat with I believe a ST300 transmission and on it's maiden voyage, I lost all gears!!!!!!!! I let it sit for the night and when I went out in the morning, it went into gear. Within a minute, NOTHING. I checked the fluid and it seemed high, so I removed two quarts and checked again. Now it was low, so i added to get the right amount on the dipstick. Then I tried to drive again....NOTHING!!!!!!!!! There is some growling underneath where the tranny is, now. I had not heard it before. Do I need to rebuild the tranny already or is there something else that might be the cause of the problem and can be fixed without a rebuild thanks for any help Matt
It might be as simple as a oil pickup that has a bad o'ring seal. If it's sucking air instead of fluid, it won't work! You would have to drop the pan to check/fix it. As Ted stated....it should be a ST400 trans behind that 401/425.

What does the shift quadrant indicator show? PRNDL or PRND21 or PRNDSL. PRNDL is ST300, the others ST400
Yes, it's a 430 engine and not a nailhead. I tried it again this morning and the same thing, goes into gear fine when I first start it and then.........yup, nothing when it warms up. thanks for all the replies, I will try to get the pan off and take a look at it more this week. Matt
Are you checking the fluid level with it running? You should be, it'll read high if the engine is off. The o-ring is on the end of the filter pickup. If it's bad the pump may be drawing in air instead of fluid. I don't think that's the problem tho. My best advice would be to consult the factory Buick service manual. it's online at: http://www.teambuick.com/index.php?page=reference You have to be signed in to view it.
Also, the transmission seems to be growling when I start the car and have not put it into gear yet.......
If there is air mixed in with the fluid, it'll make a whining noise. Adjust the fluid level with the car running (shift thru all gears, leaving it in each gear for a few seconds), put it in park, then check fluid level.
the tranny guy says it's a 375 transmission.? like a mix between a TH400 and TH350, I've never heard of it................any thoughts>
A THM375 trans is sort of like a light duty THM400. I don't believe it could be original for that car; never saw a switch pitch (65-67) THM375. It is marked 375-THM on the tailpiece, on one here. That tailpiece and output shaft are much smaller dia, like a THM350 and probably any 2 speed. There are fewer clutches in the clutch packs, but the case appears to interchange with a 400. The year of the trans will be on the tag, likely around 70-72. If you get the correct THM400, you'll need to change the driveshaft yoke to the shortest THM400 type. I wonder if your car has any sign of the '67 switch pitch control switches on the throttle linkage? Bruce Roe
It must be a ST400, as i can tell when I took it out, it has NEVER been replaced or touched................ will let you know when it's back from tranny shop Matt
