Finshing up my 72 all numbers Stage 1 frame off restoration and took a drive. I discovered the car has an open rear end and 3.08 gears. Original build sheet states 3:42 Posi the tube says LA B272... Very confused as I personally removed the rear from the car and am convinced it was never changed Any thoughts? The car will be up for sale and want to be transparant
71/ 72 GS posi rears were prone to breaking the cross pin retaining bolt. It may have been replaced before you purchased the car.
LAB is a 71 open 3.08. a 72 open 3.08 would be an LA according to this info : http://www.buickperformanceclub.com/axles.htm
Talked with a couple of guys at the Pure Stock Drags this weekend and they agree with you guys, it must have been swapped but very early on though you could never tell Thanks to all for the feedback
The nice thing about you GS is it is a 72! You GS has the same gear assembly and Chevrolet unlike the 1970 BOP rear. I had a 308 open in my 72 and replaced it with a Eaton limited slip and Motive 342 gears, worked well!
The 72 stage 1 I have had the axle swapped 2 weeks after purchase,...blew it up good the original owner told me
