i have a guy who i am trying to talk in to doing my heads he is semi retired he wants to know all the specs on both sets so he can determine how much work is involved in converting my stock heads into stage 1 heads also wanting to know a good setup for my motor that will have me running stronger through the quarter than a stage 1. my car is a 1970 gs 455 i want it to run and look stock no radical cams and things of that nature also what do i do with the stock carb so the motor has enough fuel
    thanks

I think Deniis Manner would say 10-15 hp--not much. I suspect the Drag racing boys on here and the engine builders would tell you that a ported small valve engine will whip the stock stage 1 engine hands down.

Hp is a function of how much air you can get into and out of an engine over time.

Converting to Stg1 valves will run $250-300. Have the ports matched and cleaned up. Larger valves will increase compression 0.4 Also, upgrade your ignition and exhaust for better performance.

I am running 69 heads on a 72 block. the small valve heads I ported myself with instructions for a local engine builder. With only running a 750 carb the best et's acheived to date is 12.006 open and 12.023 with 3" exhuast. The car is great 60 footer with lows in th 1.5's. Bret

I got my stock 455 heads ported by Greg Gessler. Non-stage1 intake valves, stage 1 exhaust vavles. He did a BEAUITFUL job.

I'll try to get pictures of them. Now, how long have I've been saying that for.lol.
The valves are bigger, and the ports are larger.

Having just swapped my 70 stock 455 heads for a set of Gessler Stage 1 heads last weekend on the wagon, I can say it is a great improvement. The cars pulls harder than ever. Alot more low end torque and really strong mid range. Still trying to sort out some little stuff, but very happy so far. Worth the money. Tony

missing spaces are nearly as annoying as missing punctuation -- don't you agree??

If you run stage 1 heads it will help justify having that cool "Stage 1" sticker on your air cleaner.
