I have the Chance to get an original Stage 1 1970 455. What is the value and how can I be sure it is a Stage 1 from looking at the outside of the motor.

SS stamped on the deck between the back two plugs driver's side. The distrib will end in 2016. Should have he original chrome valve covers. Intake manifold is 1231718 for a 70 455. Block stamped 1231738 at the rear just below the intake for a 70 455.

You could get the VIN from the deck of the first two cylinders and run it through Sloan or Wayne to see if it was sold in a stage 1 car. I would expect to see the letter H in the VIN.

    Thanks for the replies...

No Good on the motor..the guy was a low-life trying to pass off a standard 455 as a Stage 1 and a '73 Pickup Truck Chevy 454 as a '67 427 vette motor. I knew right away on the Chevy, but your info was great on the Buick and helped me a lot.

    Thanks Again

On a 70 (and I think to 73 ) the engine number is stamped between the front two plugs, drivers side, and the exhaust manifold on the block deck.
