were Star Wars aircleaners called that before the movie? if not, was there another name besides '67 GS aircleaner?
Paul, The '67 GS aircleaner was a 1 Year Only piece, making it both unique and rare. Star Wars didn't come out until '77, 10 Years after the '67 GS aircleaner was made. The reason it is referred to as a "Star Wars" Air Cleaner, is because it looks like it could resemble one of the Spaceships (A-Wing, Y-Wing, etc.) from the movie, that's how it got it's nickname. :Smarty: :TU:
Yes, fine, excellent..... :TU: But you still didn't answer the question.... ou: And it was the GS and Riviera GS aircleaner :Smarty:
No name at all? How'd they identify it? Must have been a code for something like "optional air cleaner group"
Remember the First One! I was working for a Buick dealer in 1967, remember the first time that I raised the hood on one and saw the thing. It was a red GS 400 4 speed. Had to replace the carburetor, for some reason the service manager thought it had the wrong carburetor. Remember driving the car and thinking my 66 L79 Nova would blow it's doors off and it would. Later in the year I traded the Nova for a GS 340 automatic so I could "settle" down and stay out of trouble with the police. Went into partners with a guy on a stocker and been racing ever since. Then 34 years later I built a red GS 400 to race. Never know hoew things will work out! JIm N.
Always Technicalities.:TU: I explained how it got it's Star Wars nickname, just to clear up the reason of WHY it's called a Star Wars air cleaner. :TU: Erik, I wasn't expecting to have to be the one to Answer the question, but since you are suggesting that I should, then, o No: I don't know! :ball: If you're asking me what it's referred to "in the Books" if you went to order one from the Dealer, I honestly don't know what it would have been referred to, that way! As far as your "general" reference, of today, it is most COMMONLY known as both, the Star Wars air cleaner OR the '67 GS air cleaner! The air cleaner that we're discussing, is SPECIFIC to the '67 GS models (not '66, not '68, not "plain" Skylarks, not "plain" Rivieras)! It's still '67, ONLY! It's still "Standard" on GS models (Skylark AND Riviera, but NOT LeSabre GS   )! It may or may not have been Optional to other models, but is it really important here? o No: And, Erik, A GS is a GS! :Smarty::moonu: :TU:
Was the "Star wars" air cleaner available with both the GS 340 and 400 ? (plus the Riviera GS of course) 340 , 400 and 430 c.i. What was the purpose of this item ? Give more HP ? Does it come off like a regular air cleaner if you wanna change the filter (only 1 bolt in the center and lift up) ? Anyways it sure looking great ! :TU:
Gs 340 NO, the Star Wars air cleaner was not on the GS 340. Bought one new (GS 340) and worked for a Buick dealer. The GS 340 had a chrome air cleaner like a 4 barrell GTO or like used on a 62 Corvette. GM must have had some of them extra they stuck on the 340. Star Wars were on the 400 only. Jim N.
Thank you Jim ! So the star wars air cleaner was available only for the "Skylark" GS400 and the Riviera GS (430ci) of 1967 . The only questions left now are ... was it only "cosmetic" purpose or it increase performance ? And , how are they made ? I read fiberglass somewhere but not sure ... o No:
These air cleaners actually did boost performance. The fins on the inside or underside of the air cleaner body were designed to direct and staighten the airflow before it entered the carb. Pete
