Ive just repaired the starter on my Buick Special from -55. But now when Ive put it back again I cant get it working. I only hear a ticking, nothing more.

The yellow cable is connected to S and the black cable is connected to the other connection on the right. I think thats how it should be. Anyone who knows?

What could be the problem? I hear a tick when I push the gaspedal (you start it with the gaspedal). So there is some kind of contact.

Im out of ideas so please help me out if you have some clues.

what did you do to it? did you test it after you fixed it?
check that when you step on the starter button, you get power to the large stud @ starter.if you have power there, its the starter or not enough travel in the linkage to the switch.

It was a proffessional generator/starter guy who fixed it. He fixed the pinion gear and some other things. Im sure he tested it, but I will ask.

Its me who put it back on the car again. So you mean I should check if theres power to the battery terminal on the starter?

Sorry for my bad english. Im from Sweden and Im not sure if I understand this "or not enough travel in the linkage to the switch." Please explain.

there should be a rod that attaches to the starter that acts like a plunger, moving the contact in the switch towards the contact on the starter.it should have some adjustment to compensate for contact wear.and you should have power to the switch when you try to start it..now,i am assuming you have the mechanical switch, not a solenoid.ive seen them converted over,so do you have the small switch or large round solenoid bolted to the starter?or better yet,a picture?your english is fine

I just went to the car and took a few pics. I had no voltmeter so I couldnt check the power now. Later...

The winter arrived early this year (in october) so it has been a bit cold to work with the car. I got no garage here and Im just want to get the car starting so I can drive it to rest for the winter in a barn some miles from here.

If all else fails make sure the car is in neutral and ground across the sylenoid with a screwdriver, that should atleast get you going to get it inside and tell if the starter is working OK.

sorry for the confusion(mine),i thought you had the older kick starter, without solenoid :error: see if you have power to the yellow wire when you crank the car over.if not you may have the small wires reversed,in which case it wont do anything.and you might want to install new connecters on the wires when you get in a warm garage  like brian said, jump between the "S" terminal & the battery terminal & it should crank over

Thanks for all help. I got it working yesterday. It was the cables. Now it will rest until may. We have a long winter here up north in Sweden.
