The rubber piece on the steering shaft that encloses the U-joint is torn on my "71" GS. Would like to replace so I can re-pack and stop the grease from running down the shaft. Anyone know what it's called and where to get one.

It is still available from GM.

I am also looking for this part. I was told that the boot is not avaliable by itself because the joint is a "non serviceable" item. They said I needed to buy the whole joint. Was I given incorrect information?

Awhile back, I couldn't find one for my LeSabre, so I got a CV-joint boot that fit. Ran me something like $15, iirc.

The GM parts guy could only go back to "76" on his computer. Give me a part# He said and it's your's. I think it is called an abrasion shield? Thank you for the reply flynbuick.

Partner I have one somewhere but canot put my hands on it . From the books I would say:

    Group 6.519

    #7803253

Ask Matt Knutson to confirm that number. I think he knows that part.

It's readily available from GM. You may need an extra set of hands to deal with the clamp or chuck the steering shaft up in a vice so you have both hands to handle the clamp.

If you have the big block steering shaft with the removable cast iron flange on the steering box end then remove that piece, use a little soap and slide the new boot on from that end of the shaft.

If you don't have the big block shaft then :Do No: .... You MIGHT be able to stretch the new boot over the two prongs (one side at a time!) on the steering column end using some grease and in warm weather.....haven't tried that method yet to see how "stretchable" these new boots are. You can be the guniea pig on this if you will report back

This is for a 455. Standard column, no tilt. Looks easy to install. I am having a hard time getting a part # for the local GM parts guy. Thank you for the response pglade.

According to GM that part # has been discontinued and none are currently avaliable. The description GM has on the part indicates that it is for a heavy duty truck application. :Do No: Any other ideas?

Does someone have one they would be willling to sell?

Interesting becasue it is molded into the back of two of the original boots off my GS cars. I just bought one a month ago!!

After a bit of research I found that is a correct part #. It is also molded in the original boot on my car. I don't know why but GM does list the description as a truck application. :Do No: This part was discontinued by GM in May. I called about 10 local dealers before I found one.
