I’ve been looking at a much neglected 68 GS 400 4 speed with Posi, locally. The owner has decided to sell it, I’ll probably pick it up next week. It is absolutely a basket case. Original engine long gone. He claims the rest of the drivetrain is original. Bottom 4 inches of the fenders and quarters are rusted off. Doors are bubbled and probably not salvageable. I’m curious about the production numbers of these cars. What would make it valuable? It does have the hood, 4-speed consolette, I think it is a factory air-conditioned car as well. All thoughts welcome. I am not planning to restore it. May want to flip it or part it out.
As much as I’d love to see it restored, it’s worth more in parts. Anyone who wants the whole car to restore is naive or can do his own work. (Or will use the VIN, trim tag and parts for a rebody-I know that’s a big can of worms and legally questionable). Presuming it’s a coupe, ‘68 was the highest production year for big blocks-10,200 or so, and they’re hard to find now, but when you do they’re not expensive. Coupes struggle to make it past mid teens, convertibles mid 20s. They’re great values for buyers in driver condition (or better yet buy a restored one the owner is upside down on). That specific car-‘68 hood is flat-no extra value there. A/C adds nothing, Four speed stuff, consolette, grill, some of the trim if nice are your value items. Tilt and buckets (?) are money items. The posi and gears are hard to find but most people just swap rears. Patrick
All 68 GS had the hood scoop whit the twins molding that runs on the hood , but otherwise it's indeed the same regular 68-69 hood
Thanks guys, I have yet to be able to see the whole car because it is covered up with crap piled on it. Should know more next week. Probably will get pictures.
I do have what it takes in the basement just in case ... http://tribuneauto.forumactif.com/d10002817-hood-buick-a-body-1968-1969 http://tribuneauto.forumactif.com/d10274630-hood-scoop-gs-1968
