Just got my ragtop home! I has the very slick looking AM/FM BUICK Stereo in it, I think one speaker in front, one out back in the seat. Now, If I were want to put a CD player in it, as well as some decent speakers, where would I do it (especially speakers, not much room with no rear deck cuz of the ragtop) Any ideas? Also, for mounting a CD player, does anyone have any experience with the hidden changers?

    Thanks!

In my convertible, the easiest solution was to not go crazy with audio

I have 100 watt surface mount speakers, in an angled enclosure, in front of, and in back of, each front seat.

The angled enclosure allows the speakers to sit partially under the seats. I used velcro strips on the bottom of each speaker to make sure they won't slide around- the hook part of the velcro grabs the carpet nicely. I beleive they were around 90 bucks a pair at Radio Shack. Not the best sound reproduction, but afer all, the car is a convertible, not a soundstage. It's probably tough to get really good sound with the top down anyway, no matter what, so I never really cared too much about the reproduction of sound.

For a radio, the real problem is that your new radio itself is much smaller than your original, and something must be fabricated to hold your new radio

Personally, I low bucked my radio because anyone with a sharp stick can pierce the roof and get into the car. I will probably put in a hidden system, with a Buick stock radio in the dash, in a box I will build where my glove compartment used to be- there's a big empty spot there if you take out the cardboard glove box

    ok, sounds good

I would like to put a CD player in, just so I have my own tunes. Got foolin around with the radio today, my AM/FM original Stereo works AWESOME! the rear speaker actually sounds pretty decent, the front one is just about shot, could be connections tho. I would like to find a good place to put speakers, can you take a few pics of your setup?

    Thanks!

Sure, maybe tomorrow. I don't have a digital camera, but my Dad does, I'll stop by his place after work.

For a CD player, I bought a Car Discman. Works like a charm. Goes right in the trunk when I park.
I'd love to put in a real stereo, but it seems I keep saving money and then buying a rear end, or a cam, or heads, or...

My Dad wasn't home. I have tomorrow off, so I'll swing by his place and see if I can't take some pics

There are a few options regarding placement of the speakers. There should be an area where the speakers would have sat in the dash for stereo sound (at least there was in the 71 Riv.) That'll hold 3 1/2" speakers. not sure if a 64 had the same thing.

  7. 64 is only setup for a single front speaker, and a single rear speaker. There have been plenty of people however that took out the front speaker to put in a double speaker system with some three or four inch speakers.

My recommendation for you would be to keep the stock setup. Get the front speaker replaced (10 ohm unit), and then hide a CD player in the glovebox, with it's remote control where you flip it open and see your ashtray. Use an RF modulator to take the CD signal to an empty FM station.

    ok, thanks guys!
I think I will be going with a 10 disc that sends out an FM signal in the truck, with a wireless remote, and just two new speakers, one in front, one in back

    What size speakers are they?

    Thanks!

You might look at this thread. I may do this for mine or I was considering making tubs for the vents in the kick panels and putting speakers in there.
