Someone here a while back mentioned you can use a corvette transistorized ignition coil. I got mine from Clutched Unlimited. Apparently they can service Stimger boxes also. I found them on the internet and called them. Been on for 5 years and works great. If someone knows of another that will work, I am interested also.
Updating this older thread with info from a 1985 Delco Remy Cross Reference manual shows that the following interchange: Delco 1115207 GM D514 Echlin IC17 Standard UC-12As of April 2023, only Standard UC-12 appears to be available, and for around $12 from RockAuto. Prior posts to this board state that Echlin IC12 crosses too, but not according to this edition of the Delco Remy Cross Reference manual. Plus Echlin IC12 costs around $35 here in Denver, which is triple what the Standard UC-12 costs from RockAuto. Finally, the Delco Remy Cross Reference manual states "These cross references show parts which are similar as to physical interchangeability and drivability. Cross reference lists should not be used as application guides. Please refer to proper listing in the application catalogs for specific make and model recommendations."
I received a new Standard UC12 from RockAuto: 9.16 K ohms, center to - 1.3 ohms, + to - The original Stinger 3102 that I have measures: 12.07 K ohms, center to - .5 ohms, + to - So now I'm not so sure if this standard coil is a good replacement, as I simply don't understand these numbers, but they surely don't match!
Ya the UC12 doesn't work. Tried it. I've tried every coil suggested on v8 buick besides an actual Corvette TI coil and same result, breaks up when getting on it. The guy at clutches unlimited apparently died that fixed and knew all about these systems and took all the info to the grave. The other guys there couldn't give me any info on the coil that they sold me previously.
Yeah this is an issue . I just measured an original Stinger coil (522) and it measured .8 ohms (+ to -) and the NAPA IC12 measured 1.8ohms.
I did a little research and a UC-12T coil supposedly has .7 ohms resistance. The T is apparently for transistor. I ordered one and will report back.....
I really like the Pertronix III ignitions, but have had much less success with their coils. I have had much better luck with the FAST PS50 coil ( I cant say it will work well with the Stinger though..): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0063DAHJW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
That PS50 with .4 ohms might be the way to go. But...at almost double the price of the Pertronix I'll try the Pertronix.
