I was reading some old posts about the stock GS air Cleaner and the insufficient air flow at higher power levels. Here is one idea to improve the air flow. This is a little more that the old flip the lid approach. Jim Weise mentioned using a 14" lid on the stock set up and I went a little further with a taller air filter. I found some data from a Ford forum(http://forum.grantorinosport.org) and selected a 4" filter. I found an inexpensive 14" lid on Amazon (the chrome was cheaper that the black!). I had to use a longer stud to make it work so I used a piece of 1/4-20 all thread. The filter is a Delco A697C. And its easy to replace the stock parts for a show. well sh it, you got no restriction there. Just warm engine compartment air. That is probably the best you can do with that setup. A K&N filter would give you even better flow and less dirt too. I would be tempted to add 2 more snorkels on both sides , the rectangular type. You could take them off a truck air cleaner at any wrecking yard. A 4 snorkel air cleaner, helllllll yeah.
This is really useful info, thank you, this shows you how easy you can shoot yourself in the foot, one of those brand filters only flowed 60 something percent, wow,
Great data! I run a stock filter, with heat stove, in cooler months and an open 4" filter in the summer. The difference is really noticeable.
I've read where the topper can disrupt air flow in to the choke horn. Have you run any back to back tests with topper and with a solid top?
And apparently the spun aluminum type cover is better than the flat/ standard chrome lids. o No: http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Sure-Seal-Air-Cleaner-Top-Only-14-Inch-Diameter,99702.html https://www.google.com/imgres?imgur...act=8#h=387&imgrc=w5zGmD13GfEggM:&vet=1&w=620
