Anyone know the Stock HP and Compression for a 78 350. I was just given one and it should go in my 78 skylark very nicely.

I'm going to guess very low, for both questions...

I know the horsepower after '73 was 150. If it did change before 1978 it wouldn't have been by much. I'm a little less sure about the compression ration, I would think it was 8.5 but I think the ratio on the 455 dropped way down to 7.9 before it died off.

yeah, the hp ratings on those motors are poor becuase of low compression, mainly. they also only used 2 barrels by then, didn't they?

if i were to use that motor's rotating assembly, i would at least put a 4bbl intake and a qjet on it. set of headers might help out, as well.

luckily, though, the block and heads are about the same, and that motor would have the stronger capscrew connecting rods in it. it's just the pistons that kill it.

    More comp

You could always resurface the heads to bring the compression back up. You are probably going to pull the heads any way to inspect you new motor.

Just look out for the "while-your-at-its":)

good suggestion. decking the block and/or milling the heads could help, just watch your clearances.

Thanks Guys... I thought it was low but it was a free 350 with very low miles... I may swap a 70 350 rotating assembly in there after a small clean up and stick it in my 78 skylark.
