Three on the tree refers to a manual transmission. No the 350 cars never came standard with three on the tree. They came standard with a TH350. Other options were a possibility.

Not so....A bodies all came standard with 3-sp. manual transmissions. Bigger cars all had automatics as standard equipment. This info is from my '71 Assembly Manual.

According to The Guide To Gran Sports (1992) edition. There were for 1971 models:
    25-3spd column cars
    358-4spd cars
5,603-TH350 all based on the GS HT 43437

    103-455 4SPD
    1378-TH 40O on the 43437 455 motor

    114-Stage1
    687-TH400 on the 43437 Stage1motor

There was no breakdown for the convertibles though.

    :TU:

The lone exception in the 'A' bodies is the 1970 GSX which came with a 4-speed Muncie as standard equipment.

  10. My 68 book also shows the GS350 std was 3spd manual column shift, while the GS400 std was 3spd manual floor shift. I wonder how many cars were actually ordered with the std tranny?

None were ordered that way. It was standard and it means you didn't pay to upgrade the transmission... :puzzled:

    :Dou:

Of course, there is one 1970 Stage1 convertible 3-speed that, besides Brads prototype, may be the rarest one out there.

    Sorry David -

I missed the production number request. Here they are for the Gran Sports.

    Enjoy!

Standard means standard equipment which is what the factory is putting in. Every other option is an upgrade and you as the consumer must pay for it.
Ok so if manual trans. was the standard why did only 25 cars come from the factory that way when 5,603 came with TH350s?

    4spd

I have one of the 103, 455 4spd's. Mine has a bench seat, any guesses on how rare that is?

    Thanks, David

My 73 is rare too.It has a factory 4 spd with bench too.I have never seen another one but a couple people on the board say that there is a couple out there. Mine also has special order paint # 65 burnt coral. With a brown interior.

Not that it makes any difference, but about half of the 4-speed GS's I've seen personally had bench seats. What is rare for me to find is a factory 4-speed GS with the original motor. Seems like many people knocked the rods out of them in the '70's.
