I think I fried my stock tach! I was using an HEI distributor and it was working ok when the car went into the body shop, but now that my car is home, no tach. I have the dash tach with one brown lead going to it. It is grounded and my extra aftermarket tach works on that brown wire. I called "tachman" and he says that the HEI dist will fry the circut board. Wish I had known that before! Anyway. I need another tach, I was going to install a points distributor that I have installed a petronix kit in it. I was wondering if I should shell out the $235 to have "tachman" repair it and convert it to HEI capeable, or buy an aftermarket one from Y.O. since I will be using the petronix kit. What are your thoughts? Thanks a ton.

cray1801 Too much is just right.

Kevin, I know exactly what your up against. I went through this process, it was expensive and my dash was apart for at least 3 months:af: . One alternative if you're not worried too much about it being completely original, is to install a 3 1/2" diameter tach in the stock location. It will be more accurate and still look nice. Someone here did this, do a search.

    Edit, here it is...

    Kevin,
I installed an in-dash Autometer# 2499, 3 3/8" . I mounted it in an old clock housing, and secured it to the dash like stock. I fully intended to have my stocker rebuilt, but this one is so dead nuts accurate, reliable, and looks great, that I've been putting it off.

I did the same thing in my dash. You can get a tach from AutoZone for $39 and it fits right in there like a glove.

Our 70GS has a Mallory tach with rev limiter and shift light in the stock location. I think it looks great.

I really appreciate the inputs from you guys, I am still wondering if the Y.O. reproduction unit is any good or if I should have mine sent out to be rebuilt. I realize that the Auto meter ones will be more accurate and really don't look bad either, but everything in my interior is stock and I was hoping to keep it that way, but don't want to shell out $235 to get mine repaired. I may look into the Auto meter one at a local speed shop to see if I can find one without the chrome ring. I think that would look a little more stock. Maybe go that route for now and get the car on the road before I am completly broke! Thanks again.

    Kevin,
I agree, the chrome ring is distracting and would look better if it was black. That tach is the Autometer 2499. It is 3 3/8" and mounts in dash. I was toying with the idea of painting the chrome black. Autometer makes the same tach with a black ring.(found that out too late) It is part # 2699, and it is about 85.00. I'm sure you could order it through Jegs or Summit, you just need to ask them for it as it isn't pictured in their catalog. They are full line suppliers so they can get anything Autometer makes. I haven't heard good things about Year Ones reproduction. The main complaint seems to be that they don't hold up very well. Wish there was a way to put the Autometers guts into the stock looking tach.

Hey Rick. I really like that tach. Could you give some more details as my factory tach is not working and I am looking to do something.
