I finally got around to swapping the S-Divider intake I have had in my garage for 2 years and I have a problem. For some reason the car idles at 1500 RPM with the idle screw on the Q-jet all the way out. There are no vacumn leaks as I have good and steady readings from the gauge. The carb idled like a dream at 750 RPM on the factory cast iron intake. Anybody got any ideas to help me out. I figured the only thing I would have to worry about were leaks. No such luck.

try disconnecting the throttle linkage, perhaps the intake sits the carb a little higher and the throttle linkage is naturally holding the throttle open a bit.

Probably seems to obvious, but vacuum leak?:Do No:

No vacumn leak and linkage is unhooked.

Can you pull back on the throttle bracket, Just to make sure that it is actually against the idle screw. I had one bind up once. Also, on my carb (Qjet) if I would floor it so the secondaries would open, they wouldn't close all the way causing a fast idle like your saying. Try to close just the Sec. lever to see if it's not fully seated. HTH

    Good luck

The secondaries are closed. I can tug on the throttle lever and force it, but it just raises back up. I am thinking something may be going on with the fast idle?

Are you sure the intake manifold is sealed?

check the fast idle screw and back it all the way out. I had the same problem with one I was working on.

Phil, I am pretty sure the intake is sealed. I have a steady 14" of vacumn, and it seems to be running fine.

Jason, I am a novice on Q-jets (they kinda scare me) so I will check that out. If I can't get it figured out, Q-jet guru Norm Dihl lives a few minutes away.

14 is a little low for vacuum....

other thing to check... when it's idling, look down the carb, see if you have gas pooling up on the throttle plates....
Alot of times when a carb is removed and shaken around the float will get knock out of wack, or something will get in the float needle valve. Then the fuel level in the bowl gets higher than it should be, and drips down the barrels....
    good luck

Well I started up my swapped 4bbl stock intake in place of the 2 bbl that came on the car. purchased a period carb from Oreilly's and guess what? Mine too idles very fast. dont think I have any vacuum leaks, idle screw back all the way down, cant figure it out. Guess I will take the carb off and inspect to see what jets?

Well, Norm came over and looked at my carb. What a mess. All kinds of incorrect/mismatched parts. We screwed with it and finally got it to where it is livable. I am gonna have to spring for one of his tricked out Q-jets soon. Heres a pic of the new combo, including the Buick air cleaner.
