    Hello Everyone

I have a 1979 Chevy Pickup (2wd) that has a blown motor. I found a 455 motor that is in a 1974 Buick Electra 225. I was wondering would the 455 work. I am open to suggestions. I heard that the 455 is a good motor. Tell me what do you think.

The 455 fits nicely in the Chevy pickup frame.

The job will take some messing around (wiring, etc.) but nothing drastic. You'll like the results.

    What transmission you gonna use?

A 'good' motor? Its the BEST!!

I did the same swap on my 84 GMC - you'll love the change. WAAAAY more power. If your truck has an automatic transmission, it'll be simple change. If it has a TH400, even easier yet.

If you decide to do the swap, post again & I'll walk you thru what I did with my truck.

    Thanks Bobc455

I have a 350 Tranny in it right now. I really don't know if that will fit the engine or not. Have any suggestions?

I don't know what bellhousing the 250's used, but I'm guessing its the same as the chevy engine, which means it won't fit. It doesn't stop your swap, just complicates it a little. You can either use the transmission from your Electra (which will be a TH400), or find a Buick bolt-patterned TH350. No point spending the money for a different one; go with the TH400. You'll then need to also relocate the transmission mount and change your driveshaft. (different length/yolk).

Can anyone add info on the trans - I'm guessing its currently a long-shaft 350, how does that compare to the TH400 for mounts? (my truck was a TH400)

If you decide to go ahead with the swap, send me a PM. I'll send you the details on what all I had to do to make my swap work.

    daward Measure twice, cut once.

I have a shif-kitted BOP TH350 sitting on my shop floor. She's good to handle up to 400 horse, and is a direct replacement for your Chevy patterned TH350 if you're interested... I'm right outside philly, just north of the PA/DE border.

You could also pick up an adapter plate which are available from Jegs online or thru the catalogue so that you can keep the chevy TH350.

However, the TH400 from the donor car would be your best option... It just might not be the cheapest.

The transmission crossmember is going to need to be set back about two inches and redrilled for the TH400 mount. Then you'd need a driveshaft cut to fit and balanced. Any reputable trans shop can do this for you.

    Hope this helps.

    250 to 455 Swapp

I was wondering what kind of engine setup is in the 74 Electra. Is it a 2 bbl or 4bbl? Is it a 4 bolt main or 2 bolt main. I would like to know that ends and outs because I would like to eventually make my truck into a sleeper. :Brow: Any suggestions?

That 455 will be a 4-barrel. The only 2-barrel ever available was in 1976 as an option. All production 455's were two-bolt main blocks. It'll be a sleeper all right. Getting traction will be a whole story in itself....
