OK, Jim, I will check it again later today with the A-9's that we pulled off. As I recall, the housing ends are very clean, with nice well defined steps or shoulders that the bearings were landing on. I didn't see anything wrong there, other than the width? Clearly there is a difference in the seals, though. I'll get something back up later on today. thanks again for the help with this.

Wow just saw the picture of the seal....You were using the wrong one. There is your problem alright. Good luck that should do it. Jim

PS like I said it is always something simple. :Dou:

I took the A-9 bearing that came off last week and a Taiwan seal and mocked them up in the tube end. It will work. Just can't bring myself to put it back together with my crappy (but functional) shims. I will get another set of Taiwan seals, BTW, these are the Pioneer 2146 for those of you following at home, and head back to the machine shop tomorrow. If the guy doesn't throw me out, I should have this matter put to bed by this time tomorrow.

    stay tuned,

Geez, what is the world coming to? Chinese seals of better (dimensional)quality than National :af:

Has me wondering how thick a bunch of Partsmaster "2146" seals are that I was given. Not a fan of Partsmaster Chink bearings so the seals are gathering dust as well.

Well, I didn't say they were better, just different! :TU: FWIW, the Nationals are hecho en mexico. At any rate, the machinist didn't throw me out (paying cash earns goodwill) and he got the seals swapped on. Everything now fits nice and snug like it ought to! Even got the wheels on and got a new driveshaft measurement - just a hair under 55" with the yoke all the way in, so subtract an inch or so for slip, and I'll end up about an inch shorter than the old shaft, just as y'all predicted.

    thanks again for the advice,
    dewey
