Any body have any thoughts on using synthetic oil in the transmission? Do they even make synthetic tranny oil? I use Mobil 1 in my bikes and car and swear by it, clutch never slips, easy starting. I'm just worried about slippage. My tranny is having trouble shifting right now, i was going to try just replacing the fluids and see if that helps. but i don't want to take the chance that the synthetic will make it worse. If changing the fluid doesn't help, i plan on doing a rebuild this spring.
Hi I'm from mtl to its the fist time I saw you here :TU: esque tu vas a orange julep ou des rencontre de vieux char p-e que l on sais djas vue
Hi, I'm pretty new here, bought the car end of November. J'ai dja tait au Julep, mais seulement l't en moto.
Yes, it is a good idea to use synthetic fluid in your transmission, and yes, they make synthetic ATF. It withstands heat much better. If your trans isn't shifting right, first thing to do is check the fluid level, color and smell. Is it full at normal operating temperature? Is the fluid dark or smell burned? Check the vacuum connection at the modulator (both ends) Make sure there are no vacuum leaks. Check the modulator itself. Make sure it holds vacuum. Point the vacuum connection down, if any ATF comes out, change the modulator. You can mix synthetic and regular ATF. They are compatible. I would not change my fluid with synthetic if I was you. If the trans needs a rebuild, you'll have wasted alot more money. Change the filter, and use conventional fluid. See if that helps.
i belive castrol makes a synthetic tranny oil. Im going to use it when my next tranny oil change is due. If your tranny is slipping you'd just be better off pulling it and rebuilding. everyone that i know of that has trany slippage has always ended up rebuilding
I changed the tranny oil and filter last night. I went to my local big-name national car shop and they wanted $100 (CAD) to do it. I said never mind, i'll do it myslef. They sold me the filter/gasket kit for 8 bucks and i picked up some oil for $20. I thought it would be an easy job until i noticed the steel bracing running accros the car hiding 2 of the bolts on the pan. After much cursing due to rusted bolts and hammering to slide the brace down a couple of inches, I was able to get at all the bolts. The oil that came out was black and there was metallic paste which had the consistency of soft clay coating the bottom of the pan. In one spot on the left of the pan there was a little accumulation of metal shavings pilling up in the crud.My guess is it's been a long time or even maybe never been changed. I had to scape the old gasket off with an exacto. When I went to put the new gasket on, it didn't fit. it was the right shape, but the width was too short and the holes didn't line up at all. I looked on the back of the package, it was listed as the right gasket for a THM350 tranny. Luckily i had some liquid gasket left over. Next time i'll try NAPA, and i'll bring the gasket that didn't fit to compare. I put it all back together and went for a ride. It still has the same shifting problem when it warms up and still whines in first gear. I'm going to have it rebuilt as soon as i get my tax refund. But i stil feel better knowing that i have some good clean fluid in there.
