My T400 has sat for a few years, long story short my GSX is back on the road with a refreshed 455, TA413 cam, but it is 100% stock apprearing.

Anyway..... the shift linkage that bolts to the driver side of the tranny, is leaking. Car sits during the week, I back it out or look under it a few days later and it's like I took a shot glass full of tranny fluid and just poured it on my garage floor..... :( . I obviously pulled the linkage and looked at the housing and there is no gasket, rubber seal... nothing :Do No: NO wonder it's leaking, my first thought is... hey jackass, you left out the seal when you put the vehicle back together.

So I first call my local Napa auto store to buy a seal, I then ask a tranny guy I know, plus I call TCI (because I purchased one of their universal TQ converter covers) and they all tell me there's no seal, gasket or rubber anything in there... :Dou:

The TCI guy tells me to fix it the "good ole boy" way and squirt some high-temp silicon in there and it will fix most of the leak.

I tried to fit an O-ring in there and it slowed the leak a bit, but it's still bad. Any idea's guys..... or I am just flat out retarded?

    VinMan out....

    Vin,
Those guys must have been drinking!

From the 70 Shop Manual, page 76-74, paragrah 72-27, states:

    1. If necessary, install a new manual shaft to case lip seal using
a 3/4" diameter rod to seat the seal in the case.

You need to find a better trans shop! :Smarty:

There is a lip seal that goes in there......I just got done rebuilding mine. It's a royal PITA to get out, I had to collapse it carefully with a small chisel first. Installing it is easy but you have to remove the pan and take the shaft out first in order to do it. The shaft is not too bad to remove, mine was held in place by a 6 penny finishing nail that slides out. Once you get it apart you'll see what I mean. You can bend the nail if you have to in order to get it out. The seal I tapped in to the case with a socket, after putting a little sealer around the edges so it won't leak. :bglasses:

So there is a lip seal.... good. I have to drop the pan to install it, I must be missing something (I'm Italian so I'm not too bright to start with). Why can't I just put the lip seal in from the outside? Are you saying the shaft has to be out of the way then you press in a new lip seal? That sucks.

That seal is so thin and narrow that you'll see what I mean. There's no way to get it out with the shaft in the way. :bglasses:

TCI said to use silicone?? Wow! There is definitely a seal that is replaceable. GM chassis service manual covers this procedure in detail.
