    Hi,

I was wondering if the tachometer in my 1971 GS has an own fuse apart from the "gauges" I somehow overlooked ?

I changed the bulbs but to no avail, it runs but it doesn't "shine" . Any ideas or similar experiences?

    All the best

Hi, yeah I know, this works with the spedo and temp/oil gauges. But unfortunatly the tachometer doesn't give me light at all. It runs as in "works" , but no light...:(

Thanks for the circuit plan. I' ll see if I can make it through it.

Hey Nailhead....I have seen no strap! I`ve seen a latch of thin metal on top of either the tacho or spedo, I can`t remember

Maybe that`s an important question. I`ve read that the bulbs in the gauges sometimes get their ground from other sources. What would you say, it still might be possible to spin that tachometer and but have no light because of the lacking ground strap?

Good point, I`ll check on that

Or simply ground the tachometer housing yourself. Easy to do. Are you using the correct 1893 bulbs?

Weeeelll, you got me there...man in the shop looked like I came from outta space when I walked in with those bulbs in my hand (must have been the original ones- straight 1971).
So I got some european aquivalents with the right socket, right size, the glass cylinder is even a little shorter but not longer than the original. It "should" work...but if I`m not getting lucky with the groundig I`ll tackle that one

A few months back, I converted all my dash lighting to LED. I used these,

I used the same bulbs for the climate control, radio dial, and glove box light.

Dash light issues are almost always one of two things: Bad bulb or bad ground. If it is a whole gauge, it is almost certainly a bad ground.

    Let there be light....

Grounding issue, thanks a lot, gentlemen. Now it even shines like the sun, the tachometer is the brightest star..a little too bright for my liking, actually. Those 1893 bulbs have originally how much Watt? Seems like the new ones I put in are a little too enthusiatic ;)

Thanks again, greatly appreciated your help.

The 1893 bulb was rated at 2 candle power. There is no conversion to watts AFAIK.

Too bright? I think the LED lighting is perfect.

Usually they are rated in candel power

Hey Larry, did you put the same LEDs in the radio...seems to have the same glow?
What kind of sockets did you use while converting from bulb to LED in the gauges/tacho/speedo?

I`ll try figuring out what 2 candlepowers would be , or try to match the bulbs for a more homogen light

    Thanks

    I used these bulbs,

    https://www.amazon.com/Instrument-C...jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==

They fit in the tachometer/clock lighting, climate control, radio dial, and glove box. Sockets? No need to change them, the above bulbs fit the stock sockets with no modification.

The rest of the bulbs, including the ones in the Autometer gauges, are 194 replacements. They also plug right in and ARE NOT polarity specific.

I don't think you will have any luck converting candle power to current bulb ratings. I am not that picky. Bright is better to me.:)

Thanks for the links...next time I`m inside the dash, I`ll think about going your way ;)
