That's 276,000 miles....not bad....can't expect alot more than that unless fluid is changed every 50K. I would just look for one that has 150K or less from a wrecked truck....with RED, clean fluid. Since wrecked you generally can believer it got to junkyard based on accident not fried trans.
Red clean fluid don`t tell all. If i have troubble with a Transmission i change the fluid and filter. I found this one wonder if it will fit. Thanks Goran
Sounds like a broken sun gear (#47 in the illustration linked below). Saw it frequently when I worked at a dealership. With that many miles and black oil, a complete overhaul would almost be mandatory. 4L60E's aren't that hard to rebuild. Plenty of info on the internet to help, if you don't mind sifting out the quacks. https://www.alltranz.com.au/shop/drivetrain/automatic-transmission/4L60E/ https://www.hotrodders.com/threads/4l60e-no-reverse.130731/ As to the S10 trans fitting, I believe it will (the bell housings are interchangeable). The 2003 should also physically fit, but I would pay close attention to the connector plug.
Thank you very much. I will take this Transmission appart. There are some very expensive parts in there. Wonder if there are some good book for this work? Thanks Goran
The only hiccup is at some point the 4l60e went from a four bolt tailshaft housing to a six bolt. I don't know the year it changed, but that would only necessitate an adapter swap.
I know this is an older thread, just noticed it. No 2nd, 4th and no reverse is a classic symptom of a broken drive shell. Sometimes the splines are stripped, other times the hub that contains the splines breaks off. Usually, there is no other damage. If the trans worked just fine and then suddenly lost 2,4 and reverse, you can replace just the shell and go on. Sonnax makes a drive shell that fixes the built in design flaws of the factory part. It’s about 125 bucks.
Yes, the Drive Shell is broken. Is there something else to look for, or change when i am in there? Thank you very much Goran.
Just need the right size snap ring pliers to remove it. Try not to expand it any further than necessary to remove it. A new snap ring is included in a gasket kit. As long as it isn’t over expanded you can reuse it. As far as what else to look for, make sure none of the clutches or band is cooked. If you removed the valve body, make sure the check balls haven’t torn up the spacer plate. If the trans has plastic accumulator pistons, I’d consider replacing them with aluminum. Of course, after all the “might as wells” before long you are looking at a complete rebuild.
Look at all of the planetary gears and make sure that all of the washers are still good. It seems like there's always one washer that's worn.
There's two generation of 4L60E's - '93 to '98 - which retained the earlier four bolt tail shaft '99 to '03 - which had the six bolt tail shaft
The tail is six bolt. On topp it say 9LUD. The 9 is 1999. I will order Sonnax sun gear shell, Gasket kit , 5- Pieces thrust bearing. Also looking to buy Dip stick and filler tube from same place. Big help is Transmission bench on Youtube. I will check the Planetary gears extra. Thank you very much Goran
