I plan on removing the TCS solenoid tomarrow from my '72 skylark 350-4 motor which is in the intake manifold and I'm wondering if coolant will come out or will it be just a big vacuum hole that'll need to be plugged? Also does anyone know what size plug I'll need to plug the hole? Thanks, Brad
You talking about the Vacuum switch? if so yes it goes into water. It will be 3/8 or 1/2npt , I don't remember which. I would imagine 3/8.
The one BOB says to the other BOB , " You have how many supervisors " ? Great movie . Where's my stapler ????
That looks close but mine has connectors out the top for wires. It's that device sticking above the manifold.
Thanks Larry, I'll go pick up a plug this morning. Also I was browsing the Parts Place INC web site and came across the TCS switch on their website. this is the number EN7111Z and they want $299.00 for the part!!! My motor is back together now and the trans has been unplugged from the TCS for some time and it works fine so all I want to do is have one vacuum line from the distributor to the quadrajet.
As Hugger stated, that location / part you show in your picture is not the TCS it is the vacuum switch. Hugger's picture shows a NOS part. http://www.v8buick.com/index.php?threads/tcs-removal.329827/#post-2765845 See Larry's great research showing your vacuum switch. But, that is not the TCS and is not that expensive! Maybe this will give you a better idea? http://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/...ical-switch+&+relay,ported+vacuum+switch,4604 Troy
As troy said . It is called a Thermo Vacuum Switch. What it does is send full vacuum to the dristributor when the engine coolant reaches around 220* . The theory is it speeds up the engine RPM's thus aiding in cooling the engine down. One thing to remember is the aftermarket TVS ports are NOT in the same position as the factory . Sometimes there is a instruction sheet in the box that explains this . Sometimes the sheet is missing . As said the Thermo Vacuum Switch is a completely different animal than the Transmission Controlled Spark device
The Thermovacuum switch that screws into the intake manifold of a 72 Buick 350 2 bbl has an electrical connection as well as vacuum ports. This page from the 1972 Buick Chassis Manual explains it's operation.
So it's called T.V.S -T.C.S switch, well it's gone nowand the car runs good and looks better with out the extra vacuum lines and the switch sticking up from the engine, but I'll hang on to it just in case! Thanks for the lesson. I took Larry's advice and picked up a '72 service manual off of eBay. A "well used one" but a complete one which I'm looking forward to reciving. Thanks for the advice!
Used. I don't think I have seen them new. Why would you want one anyway unless you are doing a concourse restoration? The TCS is a performance and gas mileage killer.
Post in parts wanted, maybe Brad W will sell you his. They can be notoriously difficult to remove from the intake without damage. Good luck.
