how does direcTV work when you cut yourself free from the land line? I no longer have home phone service. Cell only... anyone experience this?

    Dish Network

I have Dish Network, had it since '98. Similar to Direct TV, but I've had other people tell me that it's cheaper and better service than Direct TV.

Once in the spring and once in the fall, there will a couple days where at the same time of day - the signal blips out, but it's never more than a few minutes. Has to do with the alignments of the satellites at that time of year. When a large storm is coming (rain or snow), it will sometimes blip out, then go out while the storm passes. Only bad storms, only a few minutes at a time.

So, in a year, I'm without sevice a few hours total. Maybe that's a sign to get up away from the TV anyway? :pp

There is supposed to be a phone line hooked up to the system. Mine has never had one. I just don't like the idea of them (possibly) being able to monitor my habits. System works fine. On the rare occassion I want to get a PPV movie, I plug in the phone line, order, then take it back out.

You can now get your local channels from Dish Network almost anywhere. I'd highly recommend it.

There's someone here in town that has big trees around their house and they put it on a post about 20 feet from their house. The only problem I see with it is that it's *right* next to the sidewalk and about 4' off the ground, a little too easy for tampering if you ask me.

Well no direct TV for me. The guy could not get a signal no matter what we tried. I even cut a big hole in the hedges. No go but he said he could pick up the dish network fine. And said I should call them. Guy was really nice. Left me all the cable and splitters.

That came in handy as cable vision wanted $25 to hook us back up for a week till DN can come. So I said screw that n borrowed cable from the neighbors. I got plenty of nice new line.

Buried it in the ground a few inches so its out of sight. Might keep it just for the shed when we get DN.

You don't need the phone hooked up unless you want to order pay per view movies.

I have dishnetwork or DishTV, one nifty thing if you do hook the phone line up, you can enable the caller-id on the TV screen.

The satellite box has a Digital Video Recorder built in and it is the greatest invention since the wheel! Sort of a TiVo of sorts. You can pause and rewind the show you are watching. You can also set it up to record a show weekly, or just once. The on screen menus are real easy to use and scroll through quickly.
I had cable for years. When the local company swicthed to digital cable, they really jacked up the prices.
Other members of my family had satellite and the picture looked great and the price seemed reasonable, so I signed up.
My signal is good, but it is true that around 3 times a year a storm will knock out the signal. I don't mind because I usually have around 40 hours of shows backed up on the recorder anyway.
Ironically I had to go back to the cable company for broadband internet. So I have both coming into the house.
I'm very pleased with the setup and wouldn't change it.

I was set to order Direct TV when the local phone provider offered Dish Network for cheap. I called to arrange installation two and one half weeks ago.

Unfortunately, the guy no-showed. That made me mad. Turns out SBC (phone people) gave Dish Net my old address. Funny thing, the phone guy found me the same day the dish guy was scheduled. Talk about a poor partnering.

Anywho, I haven't seen TV since July 21 and its weird. Plenty of life to lead when one isn't chained to the idiot box.

I wonder what OCC is up to?

    :( :Do No:

That sucks man. I am still using the neighbors cable. Might just start splitting the bill. cables still sucks but not bad when its half price. More reasonable for crap TV and 20 infomercial channels.

OCC has done some neat stuff. The scooters were neat. Ya know Mikey cant pass the motorcycle test so he got a scooter that only needs a car license. Though the one his brother got was much nicer. They were doing burn outs and wheelies at speed on scooter that get 70MPG. Makes me want one.

They did a Irobot bike for Will Smith

The newest show Mikey got that funky AMC car from his AOL commercials from his dad for a present. stock 360 with NOS.

I saw that Matador in the newest issue of Celebrity Rides (or whatever the mags called). The magazine is basically rappers and pro athletes showcasing pimped out Bentleys. The Matador appeared out of place to say the least.
