I see that angle and it's good to have options and is certainly better for Tesla that way. As the consumer who wouldn't utilize the option I wouldn't want to pay for it. It would be easy enough to make the whole package a dealer added option. Or keep it simple and follow the conventional way- build some with and some without and let the market dictate what gets ordered.

If its 8k to activate and theres say 4k in hardware thats a significant bump in the cost of the car that will trickle down to the used market as well. I think the autodrive is so divisive yet that it doesn't make sense to have it available with the flip of a switch.. a sensible new or used buyer who doesn't want the option will likely shop the non-autodrive cars to save the 8k. Why not save them the additional $$?

For what it's worth we're sitting on the opposite sides of the fence.. I don't think either one of us is wrong.

If Tesla gets $8k every time a new owner wants it that’s a no brainer- build it into every car. Especially when most of the hardware (sensors and such) is already there for other tech. Legal? Small print probably says it is. (In general-this case maybe not). Smart or ethical? Umm...

I'm sure that Tesla removed it "in good faith" but that doesn't mean they did not also market the car incorrectly and are therefore liable for restoring it... Speaking of big brother... Google has seen my interest in this article and is feeding me more. Check out this Tesla used car story -- this appears even shadier as accident damage and shoddy repair have been covered up by Tesla... https://insideevs.com/news/398135/cpo-tesla-model-s-pressure-buffeting/
