Hello, I have the original BS TH400 transmission in my car, but all the paint on the tag is worn off. The only thing that is left is the stamped numbers that used to live inside painted? boaders. Is anyone making a reproduction decal? If not, does anyone have a good picture of a 72 BS tag that they could post? Thanks,

Matt, Thanks for the great pics! Now all I have to do is figure out how to do the graphics magic. Maybe I can come up with a stick-on decal? Have a great weekend,

Matt, The only thing that may be different is that my car was built in the Fall of 71'. Does anyone know if 71 transmissions had the same colors as Matt's tag? Thanks again,

Too bad we got saddled with a BS tag. Hopefully the others got stuck with an ASS tag.

I think I saw someone somewhere has those tags as blanks. Don't know where I saw it but remember they were blanks. Don't know how you would stamp your date codes.

I would think that a really good picture could be loaded into Photoshop, cleaned up in that program and than be printed onto any color decal material and applied to original tags. I'm no graphics tech, but, I'm sure someone on this board could pull it off easily.

    Tag Colors

Over many years working on the TH400, I have found the following:
    Model Year:
    65- Blue
    66- Yellow
    67- Black
    68- Blue
    69- Yellow
70- Was a mixed year. Some (early?) Black
Some (later?) Red (looks more pinkish........ugh)
    71- Blue
    72- Yellow
    73- Red (pinkish)
    74- Blue
75- should be Yellow, but haven't seen a 75 trans is years
76- should be red (pinkish), again have not seen one in years
77- should be Blue, again have not seen one in years
78- should be yellow, again have not seen one in years
79- should be red (pinkish), have not seen one in years

There can always be exceptions, but this is what I have seen.

Mark, Thanks for the great info! So, it looks like I'll need a blue tag for my late 71 build, 72 Skylark GS 455.

Anyone have a good pic of a 71 Tag? Thanks,

    Rob,
I think with the different colors for the different years he was referring to the actual model year. So all 72's should have yellow.

Yes, my post was for specific model years and not the year built. All 72's should have a yellow painted tag regardless as to whether they were built in 1971 or 1972.
    Sorry for any confusion.

    Thanks!

Mark, Thanks for the info again! I think the pic posted by Matt will be a good place to start with a decal.

Once a trans is cleaned or hot tanked, the paint is gone from the tag and only the stamped numbers are visible. The paint on the original tag of my 69 Stage 1 has begun to just flake off on its own.
I had always thought decals would be a great idea. Just didn't have enough expertise to do it. They need to be clear in some sections so that the stamped letter/numbers can still be viewed.
One issue may be that there could be some copyright infringement as the GM name is used on the tag. Also, someone could just put a "BB" tag on any trans to help fake a Stage 1. Food for thought there.
    Good Luck,

    72 "BS" ID TAG

Mark, I see your concern about the fake "BB" issue. However, if someone wanted to fake a #'s matching Stage 1 transmission, wouldn't they have to fake the stamped serial number on the pan rail as well? I'm not sure of the copyright rules regarding a reproduction decal. I am going to try to make the yellow 72 tag first and then, depending on how it comes out, I'll try the other years. I'm not a computer genius, but I am a quick learner and I also have access to a really talented graphics shop here at work. I'll keep my progress posted on the board. Thanks again,
