Can a TH400 longt ail be converted to a short tail? I am buying a 1970 estate wagon with a 455 and th400 and assume it is a longtail th400. My plan is to buy a skylark and use the estate wgons 455 and th400, but I would need a short tail th400 for the skylark. I will get the th400 rebuilt with shift kit etc when I eventually do the conversion so the tranny guy could do it then I suppose. I am not too familiar with tranny building. Thanks for the input.

    Yes

"Ohh and do you think a 1970 estate wagon, in good shape minus a big dent in the fender that runs well is worth 1800 dollars? I want it just for the motor and trans really?"

Maybe not, but where you are you may have no choice. Your best chance to get some of your money back may be to part it out. This assumes it has good sheet metal.

Just to give you some frame of reference I bought a 70 455 and trans for $250.00 locally. I think a good deal would be still at $500.00 or less.

damn...thats all I really wanted was the 455 and trans. The car is in great shape too though, maybe if I buy a skylark I will put the 350 or whatever engine into the wagon when I do a motor swap. Living in Canada sucks when you want to get in the car hobby, you guys have so much more cars/parts down there, well obviously you have 10X the people so natural to have 10x the cars/parts. Wanna sell me your 455 haha

    Hi,
I purchased a running 70 Electra for $650.00, for the motor and tranny, rusty condition. I thought that was too much, but like you said things are hard to get in Canada. I parted it out and was able to get all my invested money and keep the motor and tranny.

I saw a thread some time ago about changing a th400 long shaft to a short shaft using the taill shaft and tail stock from a th350:Do No:
    I've got 3 or 4 th400 long shafts and 2 th350's

so, can a TH 350 short shaft and tail housing swap onto a long shaft 400?

No, I think the 350 and the 400 tailshaft spline counts are different. I 'm pretty sure the tailshft on the 400 has 32 splines and I think the yoke for the drive shafts are different lengths between the 400 and 350

    A "long tail" T-400 will work in a Skylark......(GM "A" body)
You just have to get the correct length drive shaft.:idea2:

I do know that tail shafts for TH 350 vs. 400 are not interchangeable.

As far as long shaft TH 400s working in the A body, I am not certain about the pinion angle causing problems.

I run a "long tail" T-400 in my car ('70 Cutlass). No issues with the pinion angle causing problems......

I too have ran long 400s in A body cars with no issues except one of the cars was for my 17 year old at the time. He went through 3 400 turbos.
