Okay, so i pulled the 455 last week to fix a rear seal leak, I also yanked out the th400 to get a better look. Prior too, I noticed for a few weeks that 2-3 shift seems very "soft". 1-2 shifts hard like always at part throttle, but the 2-3 seems softer, and sometimes I have to get off the gas a part throttle to get it to shift into 3rd. I completely rebuilt the trans approx. 4 years ago when I but 455 in, though there is probably only about 5000 miles on it. I brought the trans into the basement and pulled the pan and drained the fluid. 2 things, the fluid is as bright red and brand new looking as the day I poured it in. Smells perfect, not even a hint of burn or discoloration. Secondly, I would expect if clutches were burning, absolutely zero residue or fine particles of any sort in the pan. The pan is flawlessly clean. So what gives? Any insight would help.
