I'm pretty sure the speedometer drive gear on my TH400 is pressed onto the shaft. There is no clip on-or-anywhere-near that gear. And the replacement gear is not machine on the inside to fit one; it's completely smooth all the way around. So, is there a special tool available - or trick - to getting them out with the transmission in the car? Or do I need to have a transmission shop do it? Worse yet, does the shaft need to come out? I can live with a bad speedo if the shaft needs to be removed, but thought I'd ask to see if anyone else knows how to do this.
The drive gear comes with 15 to 20 teeth; the driven from 34 to 45 teeth. The plastic drive gears are easily un clipped & exchanged; I always use them. The metal ones are pressed on, and not easy to pull off, but can be replaced with plastic + clip. No need to take out the output shaft. Bruce Roe
Thanks, guys. Good to know the shaft can stay put. I'll take a second look at replacing the gear after I get the car running. :beer
If someone replaces their rear gears with a different ratio, the speedometer reads off. How do you correct this and what teeth would be needed for 3.42 rear with 15 inch relatively stock profile tires? Is there a how-to for this and a gear reference chart anywhere? o No:
Thanks Devon, my search returned nothing. Just like the guy in that thread you gave me. I searched for "speedometer gear replacement". Go figure.
