Ok, can someone tell me or better yet have a diagram of the way the trans fluid runs through the trans cooler, which line is out put and return on the tranny? Does it matter on how it is hooked up with a trans cooler?
    Thanks

    Tim,
Very simple. Unscrew the top fitting at the radiator. This is the return line. Slip a piece of 3/8" inch hose over the line, and connect the other end to one side of your auxiliary cooler. Screw a barbed nipple into the fitting on the radiator, and run that to the other end of your auxiliary cooler. Fluid flows from the trans into the radiator cooler, out the radiator cooler to the auxiliary cooler, out the auxiliary cooler back to the transmission. This is thebest way to do it.

Larry, I bypassed my radiator and am juat running the trans cooler, is this the best way? Or should I use the radiator also?
My engine has about 1,000 miles on it and runs between 185 and 200 degrees depending on outside temps.

Larry, which line is the output line on the tranny, I unhooked these from the radiator last year and I don't remember which is which, upper or lower line from trans?

No, run it through the radiator cooler, than the auxiliary cooler.. That is the best way for a street car. It is impossible to overcool the trans this way. Yes, you can overcool the transmission. Transmission fluid has an optimum operating temperature (175-225*). I know some guys will disagree with that.

Top line at the trans, goes to top line at the radiator. This is the return line. Cooler fluid returns to the trans from the cooler through this line.

I had to make my own tranny lines to fit through the headers they don't touch them but they are a little tight. I think that they will keep the trans fluid warm, I worry about the trans fluid getting hot and raising my engine temperature, what do you think?

How to Work with and modify The Turbo Hydra-matic 400 Transmission, by Ron Sessions. Great book, lots of useful information. Even covers the switch pitch transmissions. I highly recommend it.

    Tim,
My cooler lines come close to the headers also. I have them wrapped with insulating tape at the nearest point.

JW sells a trans cooler line kit, that routes the lines through the frame. That's the ultimate way to go. Lot's of guys have used them. I've read a few posts on them. Do a search under transmission cooler lines.
