A 700R4 core goes for about $150 around here. You can get them rebuilt, stock, for about $550 or so. Check ebay too. But they won't bolt up to a Buick, they are a Chevy tranny.

Correct me of I'm wrong, but your car should have anailhead in it? Therefore no trans will bolt up to it, 700R4 (Chevy only) or 200R4 (BOP & Chevy). Your best choice is to run a nailhead pattern ST-400, known generically as a turbo 400.

a buddy of mine has had the awesome solution to converting a 700r4 chevy tranny to one that will fit in buick/old/pontiac *B.O.P.* (keep in mind he has been a tranny guy for 22 years now* he cuts the top 2 bellhousing bolts and the whole "peak to the chevy out. then he does the identical thing to a bop tranny. he then wields the bop part to the 700r4 thus changing the bolt pattern and voila! you can put a 700r4 behind a 455! ive seen it him do it to oldsmobiles and im tossing around the idea of eventually doing it to my buick to make it more of a comforatable driver. im not sure ho te case would hold up to racing situations but who uses a 700r4 for that anyways? should be fine as a daily driver.

I've got a better idea...I have a 200R4 behind my 455 and it is a bolt up. The 200R4 can be made every bit as stout as a built 700R4. Mine was built by Bow Tie Overdrives and is good to 550 pound/foot torque.
But does anybody know if the 64 300 cubic inch has the BOP bolt pattern? There is a 200R4 from a GN for sale locally, and I thought that would be a great improvement over the TH300

My 65 300 used the BOP bellhousing.

Can the 200 use any of the tailshaft components from a 700R4 or Th350?

    GStage1 Always looking for parts!

There is a company on our site below who makes adapters. They are called Rods-n-Racing in Calif. I think the Nailhead adapter is $200. See the 60+ helpful tips for the info. I have their contact info listed.

As for the best solution, if the car is not for highway use, I would stick with the switch pitch 400 for the nailhead.

As for 700R4 trans, they are the hottest item sold here at the local u-pull-its. They cost $35 + $15 core. ALL GMC Safari and Chevy Astro vans have them. Those vans use the 4.3 Chevy engine which is the same as a Chevy 350 w/2 cyl removed.

If you are going to have a 700 rebuilt, you can use any year. If you want a drop in, use 86-up versions since they made improvments (10 vane pump). Many full size GM trucks(Suburban, Blazer, 1/2 tons) have the 700R4.

Also, the TV cable hook up on the 700 will have to be "engineered" on the carb. Buicks do not have the correct linkage for a bolt-on application.

    Good Luck!

    700R4 aka 4L60 tranny for a Buick

There is a 700R4 (actually I think they call it a 4L60) trans that will bolt up to a Buick. It is used in the 4th Gen Camaros. I beleive the one that does not have electronic control (other than converter lock-up) was used in 1993 and 1994. The reason it will bolt to a Buick is because it was usedfor the 3800 motor. The base 6 cyl Camaro got the ol' Buick 3.8 motor. So to come full circle, these Camaros are RWD cars with a 700R4 that has the Buick pattern.

I don't think they changed the bellhousing pattern on the RWD Series II 3800's. I think you'll find they have the same pattern as the FWD setups.

The 200-4r can be built substantially stronger than the 700r4/4L60e anyways!!:Smarty: :TU:

Maybe you are rignt, as they use the FWD pattern in RWD applications such as the 2.8 and 4 cyl, S-10 cars. I'm not sure what they did for the 3800. I'm thinking I heard something about the starter location on the 3800 FWD being in the way when used in RWD applications. Maybe this was froma Jeep guy doing a retrofit...I don't recall.

The funny thing is, all the S-10 cars with a 7004R have a one peice case. The one Camaro I saw on a lift with a 3800 motor had a 4L60 (not a 4L60E) with a removable bell housing. It kinda reminded me of some Ford transmissions I've seen. I'm just mentioning this as food for thought. Maybe others can look at thir girlfriends Camaro to verify my suspisions.

I totally agree that the 2004R can be built stronger than a 700R4. I think I remembered hearing that the 200 shared some engineering with the Th400 design.

You know what....now that you mention it, I do remember hearing that the newer 4L60e/4L65e come with a removeable bellhousing. That's promising, since it could mean someone has a BOP style bell that could go on there!!!:TU: :bglasses:

Seems like that would be a good one to make a custom bell for the nailhead guys!!

If you have access to to the magazine "ROD AND CUSTOM" you will find ads in the back of it for boltingup a Chevy Trans with a nailhead....I will look on my collection and find out what the name of the company and also what issue they did a article on it. It does not look that diffacult to do.

Summit racing has BOP to Chevy and Chevy to BOP adapters for about 69 bucks, I belive they are made by transadapt. That said
the 3800 Camaros you are talking about do in fact use the FWD patter and are found in 95 and up Camaros and firebirds with a V6.

Summit and Jegs both carry the adapter kits to go from Buick motor --> chevy tranny and vice-versa. I just used one to put a th350 into my '67 Special. Install was a piece of cake. The only problem was that the holes in the adapter plate were to small for the guidepins on my 340. I had to drill out the adapter plate and the tranny to get it to bolt in.
