I guess I might as well start with my first question now, lol.

in the last picture of the engine... what is that sensor / sending unit? that is located in the intake manifold behind the distributor. It has both vacum and electric to it.

I really need to find a service manual for this car..... is there anywhere I can get one from?

Curious on the color, was it Black originally or color changed. I didn't think Black was available on the Riv in 72.....special order ???

That is a ported vacuum switch...'72 is different from other years.

    Check out http://www.oldbuickparts.com/cat610/61003.pdf

It is shown on page 32 of their parts catalog. PVS-72

http://www.oldbuickparts.com/cat610/61016.pdf shows the shop manuals. You can some times find them on ebay, or even listed on this forum.

Oh, and BTW, I really like your nice Riviera...good find!

from what I have read black was a rare option.... although this car was originally grey / silver.

as to my last question... I think I have found out what that sensor is..... the TVS.
I read on here that it is part of the emission controls and it shuts off the vacum advance in lower gears.

It seems it is a good thing to remove / bypass as it will actually hurt performance... does this sound correct?
This car no longer has the points distributor, it has a HEI dist. if that makes a difference

Are you keeping the Black ? The no vinyl top looks great, these cars don't need it. It lets you see the character line down the roof. Every car I looked at before buying mine with a top, a price for removal was figured in.

it likely will not stay black, although I am not totally decided on a colour yet. I agree about the top... I much prefer no vinyl.

thanks, as far as plans.... the only thing I am sure of is that it will not be a stock restoration. I much prefer custom. It will have a mild build engine for the ocasional trip to my local track on a friday night. The main purpose will be show and cruise. I like clean and simple, straight lines.

it is my better replacement for my other toy.... something that will actually have some go along with sexy curves...
