Thinking of buying a 67 Riv GS

Hi Guys. I'm thinking of buying a 67 Riv GS. Car looks pretty good in the photos (they always do). Where do these cars typically rot? Apparently the car had one repaint 10 years ago. How do I verify it is a GS? Say the car is a #3, what's a fair market price for it? Here's a few pics:

As far as rot is concerned check the wheel well areas the trunk/spare tire recess. The area under the battery tray. Those are some of the big ones, and if it had a vinyl top check the A pillars or for a rust stained headliner.

The GS was option package, there was no difference in the VIN numbers to verify it as a GS. I know some of the options included were a chrome aircleaner lid, and a 3.42:1 posi rearend.

That looks like a sweet ride. As you mentioned the pictures look good. No cracks in the steering wheel:TU:

I'm sure you already know this, but that side moulding is not factory. No biggie, but just so you know. Otherwise, that car appears to be really nice! :Brow:

As for rot spots, these cars like to rot the windshield pillars, as well as the cowl below the windshield. What happens here is if the car gets left outdoors a lot, leaves and debris like to find a home in the space around the windshield and absorb moisture like a sponge, thereby making rot. Also, around the pinchweld area of the rear wheel openings and above the tail lights on the rear. It also wouldn't surprise me if you found rot under the rocker panel mouldings at the bottom of the front fenders. Just like any other car, these rot too, although the ''x'' frames tend to be immune from rust.

As for being a real GS, it's just another option anyway and not a particular model, so as long as it has 3.42 posi and the correct ornamentation I wouldn't be too concerned. I'm not sure about the air cleaner having a chrome lid.....wasn't it supposed to be the Star Wars in '67? You could try turning the steering wheel stop to stop, because that year the GS models were supposed to come with quick ratio steering. As long as the box is still original, I think it will go 2-1/2 turns stop to stop unless I'm mistaken. The standard box is about 3-1/2 turns.

In the photo, I noticed the steering wheel isn't cracked........that's certainly a plus! :)

It would have the one year only star wars air cleaner if it still has the factory unit installed.

My mistake the chrome air cleaner lid didn't come out until '68:Dou:

I'd stay away from it cause everyone knows they aren't muscle cars. (I give Joe about 5 minutes on this one. Does he type faster when he's mad?)

    Seriously sweet looking ride.

No engine shots yet. The owner hasn't replied to my email. I do have a co worker who has seen the car in person and he called it a "nice driver"-a car you could take to cruise night and not be embarrassed. He said the paint is decent, not perfect. Slight bubbles in the C pillar under the vinyl roof. He said the owner is not really a car guy- "Joes garage" changes the oil for him etc.
The chrome looks good in the photos too. I'll keep y'all posted. BTW he is asking $7k

Looks like a nice '67 Todd, and Matt 'n Joe have pretty well detailed the info you were after. '67 was the first year for the 430 engine, and GS cars had the red fibreglass SW air cleaner.
Rust bubbles under the vinyl top doesn't sound to good - check the front windshield and rear glass for signs of leaking,
and take a good look underneath for signs of rust through on floor pans and cross braces.
$5 - $7K sounds about right for a good example, not needing a lot of restoration work :beer :TU:

Tread carefully. 7K might seem low for a Riviera GS in good condition, but if there is hidden rust, especially under the vinyl top, it could be expensive to fix. Get the car up on a lift and really look it over BEFORE you hand over the cash. Does it have the standard interior or the deluxe interior? power windows and front seat? How many miles on the car? All these things come into play when you spend your hard earned money.
There is a plum colored 67 Riviera GS for sale on ebay right now that shows the correct air cleaner and the larger A/C compressor pulley used on the GS. The Riviera GS also came with a larger front sway bar (15/16" instead of 7/8"), stiffer shocks, and a 3.42 posi rearend. There is also a narrow steel bar that is mounted across the underside of the center of the hood to hold the hood insulation up away from the "Star Wars" air breather.
I am NOT the guy selling the plum colored 67 by the way, I just thought you could use it as an example of parts that come with the GS package.
Rivman in the post before mine has helped me a great deal when it comes to 67 Riviera information. Most of what I mentioned here is info he gave me to use when working on my 67 Riviera.
Hopefully the car you are looking at will turn out to be a good deal. Later, Randy

Thanks for the info guys. Still no reply from the owner. I'm going to email him again. The more I look at it, the more I like that body style. I'd look good in it! :bla:
Looking at the price guides and completed ebay auctions on these cars also led me to think the price was low. I hope I can get a hold of him to see it Sunday. I'll have my camera with me so I'll post photos.

Is that the one that's been floating around on Kijiji or the one on trader.ca? Where abouts in Ontario are you? 7k would be a fair price I think, for both the buyer and seller, not a great price, and I'd try to go lower. But fair.

I'd be pretty careful with this one...the waviness in the rear quarter panel may just be dents, but it may also be shoddy bodywork covering a myriad of sins. Safe to say if they weren't patient enough to block it straight, they probably didn't spend much time on panel repair, either.

Looks to be a nice car, maybe some orange peel on the paint, and has that "I've been towed" front bumper. Of course, that could have happened 40 years ago.
    I'd seriously consider it. :TU:

That crack free steering wheel sure is an anomaly.

That's the one on Kijiji. Wasn't able to hook up with the owner this weekend. Car is located in London, Ontario. I'm getting leary of any Canadian cars anymore. I looked at a Canadian only 69 Pontiac 2+2 that was on Kijiji last Thursday night. One of 12 built with the 390hp 427/4speed (yep, to our U.S neighbors Canadian built Pontiacs had Chevy engines). This was a one owner car with 31000 original miles. Owner stated all it needed was paint. Car hadn't moved in 8 years. Unfortunately the car was stored in a garage with a dirt floor and no climate control. The underneath was a complete disaster-rot out etc. The interior had the worse case of mold I've ever seen. Owner wants 20k for it! First time I've looked under a car and all that was left of the exhaust was some fragments of muffler baffles! Even the gas tank had rotted out!
I'll keeep looking for something solid and cool if I don't get ahold of this Riv guy
