Tight yoke in trans

After breaking the rear yoke at Norwalk, my yoke goes in real tight into the trans. Pulled the ext housing off to check the bushing and it's OK. Tried to install the driveshaft without the ext hsg and still tight. Tried the shaft in another trans and it's fine. Dressed the splines up with a file and some emory and still tight with NeverSeize.
I had something similar after breaking a rear and just forced the shaft in the trans and when it needed to come out it came out easy.

Should I try that again? What would be damaged by not moving smoothly on the splines? Bearings in trand? Converter?

    Bruce,
You probably bent the output shaft when the driveshaft was flopping around. Are you sure you didn't crack the tailshaft, it is common to brake the case when a driveshaft breaks.

Case and tailshaft appear OK. It must be bent.....the splines look OK.
Wouldn't the bushing prevent it from bending?

What ya think? Stick the shaft in there and go for it?

Since the case is a much softer material, it could give a little without breaking. It does sound like your output shaft is bent.

You could try ramming it on there, but I'd say you'll have problems. As the rearend moves through it's travel, the driveshaft will be jerking on the innards of the trans. You may end up stranded somewhere with a huge, red oil puddle under the car.

Maybe you could put some blue die on the yoke and spin the tranny. If it is wearing off in one spot the shaft is bent. The tailshaft case is an easy change. Do you have someone locally you could borrow one? If it is the shaft and it is bent, I bet it will vibrate if you run it the way it is.

Yeah, it's tight even without the tailshaft. If I run it for a while and have suspension movement I'm hoping that it will smooth out the splines and come out easy. But if the output shaft is bent I'm screwed.....

    Thanks for the input...

Possibly twisted the end? I bet you will be ok after some use. Good luck!

Thanks.....I'm going to give it a shot. If I have vibration I'll pull the trans but right now I'm handicapped with a broken (displaced fracture) finger. It's amazing how one finger can handicap on certain jobs......

Yeah, like picking your nose! :TU:

Take it easy until you see how it acts. Good luck.

I've got plenty of other functional fingers for that.

Well after 1/2 hr of careful filing of the splines on the output shaft with a 3 point file and some more lube, it's sliding in and out nice and smooth. :Brow:
