Does anyone know if a key cylinder from a non-tilt column, go into a tilt column? Are they the same part?

I can't imagine why they would be different. I say yes.

For model year 1973 it's the same part number.

Thanks for the replies, got a tilt out of a 72' Cutlass for my 72' Skylark and I'd like to have the same key as the doors.

George, I went through the article on your site and yes I think I can get the key out. I have heard about a diagonal slot on the cylinder body on a tilt cylinder, but not on a non tilt (but could be modified to work). Anyone else aware of this? Bye the way George, all the articles on your site are very helpful, I don't know how people find the time to write them. I barely have enough time to work on my car, but I'm thankful the information is out there. And thanks for all the responses from this board very helpful people.

I got the tilt assembly apart, key cylinders are slightly different on the backside but the non-tilt works in the tilt column. Only one problem, the spring that goes on the sector gear was broke when I took it apart! Anyone know if the non-tilt has the same spring? I haven't taken the non-tilt all apart yet and can't tell if it has the same spring.

I found a source for the new spring. Took the column apart and cleaned it and greased the bearings, but when its all back together the cancelling cam hits the screw that holds the turn signal arm on! What am I doing wrong?

Canceling cam is no where close to that screw...there are two springs...one is shaped like 6 and the other is shaped like 9 that the cancelling cam contacts.

Provide a pic and I can tell you what you did wrong.

I was looking at the turn signal mechanism and it looks like two springs are missing and there is a spring loaded contact that seems to be stuck down. Are the tilt and non-tilt signal mechanisms the same? They appear so. I'll try and post so pics in the next day or so.

Sounds like your turn signal mechanism is bad....your two springs, 6 and 9, are missing due to breakage...not uncommon. The plunger is for the horn contact and sounds like that is broken also...no way to fix that...so you will need to get another turn signal mechanism or a new one.

Tilt and non-tilt use the same mechanisms.

The bearing race goes on followed by the cup and then the spring, correct? But when I put the canceling cam and the lock on, the ring seems to go down too far. You have the thread, then a spline for the steering wheel,a groove, then the spline for the lock and the groove for the retainer ring, right? Sorry about the pic I know its blurry, crappy camera.

I took the canceling cam out of my non tilt column and put it in the tilt.

Maybe you have the wrong spring?
Without seeing it in person....hard to make a determination.

It seems like the shaft needs to come out a little farther, but I can,t get it to. The spring for the non-tilt is the same length as the tilt spring I have. When the shaft goes in, the spline at the bottom sticks out the same amount as the non tilt. The shaft only goes in one way right? Maybe I just need to take it apart again.

If you are using the same parts when you disassembled the column....then your upper bearing race...inner one is not seated properly. Take a drift or drive punch and seat the race. Let me know what you find out.

Took the column apart again, no luck same as before. When it's all together, the spring is at or just below the retainer ring groove. All the races are seated. Tried the spring from the non tilt same as the tilt. When I got the column, it already had the lock plate off, and the guy had taken the turn signal lever off so it wouldn't break during shipping. Could it be something with the shift tube? I hadn't touched that. When all together shouldn't the spring be somewhat lower than the retainer ring groove?

I think you are missing the spring spacer....it sits above/on the upper bearing inner race.........looks like an upside down flower. It is about 1/4" tall.

Let me know if you have it....I can send a pic if needed.

Isn't that the spacer that's shown in my pic? If anything I need more distance between spring and retaining groove not less.
