timing cover question

    i would like to know if the 1970 timing cover(1/2'' oil holes ) can be modifed.[ see, i just modified my oil passage from the oil sump which is now 5/8'' . i installed a 5/8'' oil pick up tube and i am in the process of doing the threaded plugs behind the timing chain. just as safety precautions.also , i want to change the cam bearings to hardened grooved bearings. can it be done at home with a rental tool as i'm very handy and careful . any input would be greatly appreciated.

    Yes it can be opened up to .625" but will need to be done on a mill. Granted the walls will be thinner but it will work. also use the later timing cover gskt.

    Cam bearing questions

    I agree you can increase the size of the hole. Be careful when you put the gasket on that you cut this away as well spray tack the gasket so it doesn't slip out with the thin side clearance.

    I have a comment on your cam bearings question. I resently spent much time talking to TA performance engine builder Mike. I have had a lot of issues with cam bearings and he stated the following:

    1. The TA dual groove bearing works well as long as the block has not been altered as mine had been. So if your block is factory you can install with a good bearing installation tool. Take your time!

    2. Be careful to align the oil grooves over the main supply holes so both grooves get oil.

    3. Install the first oil holes at 3:00 to 3:30 oclock position and the other hole at the 7:00 to 7:30 position.

    4. Use 5w30 to break in and DO NOT rev higher than 1500RPM. Cam grinders say 2500 RPM, this is so adequate oil is thrown from the crank to lube the camshaft on breakin but these revs can smoke a new set of bearings. If you use 5w30 it will oil adequately at 1500RPM.

    Normally you will not have much trouble unless you use a lot of valve spring pressure.

    As I was driving, reflecting on my previous comment I remembered I left out one very important procedure when installing new cam bearings.

    In addition to previous comments, you must run the oil pump with a drill motor to remove all air from the oil passages. This should be done immediately before you fire the motor so the bearings have oil at the instant they begin to turn at speed. Very important.
