Timing on 350 w/ TA 212 cam?

Have 69 GS 350 with TA 212 cam with Holley 750 and all else stock. Been having problems getting it tuned in. Have 12-14" vacuum and set idle to 700 in Drive and it idles fine. Still doesn't have quite the performance I expect yet. The timing is at approx. 15 deg initial and I have a stock distributor with pertronix and light springs.

How do I proceed with the timing setup? Do I connect or disconnect vacuum advance?

How much mechanical timing does stock distributer have? Do I need to install a bushing to limit timing?

How high can I set initial right now with stock distributor? It seems to like more and more timing but I am hesitant on doing that. I get no pinging at all at 15 initial with or w/o vacuum advance hooked up.

BTW, I hook the vacuum advance to timed port on Holley.

    Thanks,
    Dan

The number one starting point to get accurate timing is to ditch the stock points distributor and install a known good HEI distributor.
Your initial timing sounds about rite, but who knows what all else is going on with the rest of the timing curve. I havent heard ANYTHING good about the Pertronix ignition, and while the factory points ignition WAS good in the day, theres alot that wears and is probably ready for a complete replacemnt. 18 years ago when I installed a Kenne Bell cam in my 71 GS 350 with the stock points distributor, I could not run more than 8 deg. initial, and the car was a dog off the line, plus it would surge at light throttle cruising, I installed a 350 HEI from a spare motor and WOW:beer What a difference!!!!! Accurate timing IS everything:grin: Plus the car fired up with just a quick turn of the key, no need to crank and pump the gas.
I was able to run 15 to 16 deg. initial timing. Hope this helps, Mark

Which spring kit are you running. If it is a Mr. Gasket, the springs are way to stiff. Get a Grane or an Accel. With these kits, using the medium springs works perfect for me. 14 initial and 34 total all in by 2200 RPM. The advance comes in at around 900 RPM. Keep in mind vacumn advance has no effect on total timing, because there is no vacumn at WOT. I am running a Pertronix as well, no problems with this one, but they do seem to be unreliable.
