What can I use that will permanently get rid of the white on the white letters? Ordinarily I would just flip the tires to the blackwall side but that side is pretty busy looking. Lots of fine ribbing and just generally ugly. So far I've tried a Sharpie. That didn't work, not that I really expected it to. Last night I bought some black shoe polish that I'll try today but I'm not real optimistic about it. Any other suggestions? I would like to be able to clean the tires when they need it without cleaning off whatever I use to black them out.

I have used a permanent laundry marker (don't remember the brand) before to cover up whitewalls. You must make sure the tire is clean of all tire dressing products first. Even then I had to touch it up every few months. But this was on a daily driver so on a weekend type car it may last longer. I would try this before the shoe polish because once you put shoe polish on them it will be hard to get anything else to stick.
