1 full rotation of the wheel resulted in a little more than 1.5 turns of the driveshaft…..

If your tachometer is accurate, you have 2.56 gears. That gearing produces approximately 30 MPH/1000 RPM.

There should be a 2 or three letter code on the axle tube.

    Thank you Larry
That explains why it won’t get out of its own way…
350, small cam, no idea on heads etc. has headers and turbo 350…. Will take it on road trips on occasion though mainly running around town and a few Saturday night matches on the street. What gear would you suggest????

If the car is a 1970, and it still has the original 8.2 10 bolt rear, you can't buy new gears for it. No one makes them. If it is a 12 bolt, there is no problem. What rear is in the car now? Keep in mind it may not be original. The car is 50+ years old.

Not sure. When I bought the car there was a picture of the restoration with the rear end out of it. I sent all the information I could find on the reared, it is a 10 bolt. Here is a picture:

Looks like a 68-70 8.2 10 bolt. No new gear sets made. At one point, Fabcraft Metal works was making 3.42 and 3.64 gears. They were supposed to make a run, but I think there just isn't enough demand to justify their investment. People need to call them if they want it to happen.

    Posi carrier,

The 1968-70 Buick only 8.2 10 bolt is a forgotten rear. It is NOT the same as the 1964-67 Buick Olds Pontiac 8.2 10 bolt. People mistake that rear for the 68-70 rear for the 64-67. Parts are commonly available for the 64-67 BOP rear, but not the 68-70.

    You mean 2.5 turns?

1.5 turns of the driveshaft to 1 full rotation of the tire…
Sounds like the simplest thing to do is find a whole rear end

Look for a 71-72 Skylark/GS or Olds Cutlass 8.5 10 bolt. The 8.5 enjoys great aftermarket support.

Mart- I know 1.5 to 1 tire rotation makes no sense but I did it several times and that is what I got...Larry says its a 2:56

Are the 8.5 different lengths from one year to the next? I ask as I may have a line on a 70 ish chevelle rear end... What gear do you gentleman suggest given its a 350, small cam mystery motor. Some hwy but mostly running around and a few weekend grudge matches.....

    Width is not an issue.

In general, you can swap in any 64-72 A body rear. If you stick with the BOP rears, they are bolt in axle. Chevelles are C clip rears. The bolt in axles make it easier to swap rears. You can pull the axles, wire up the brake backing plates, then swap the rears, reinstall the backing plates, and axles, and not have to mess with brake hydraulics and emergency brake cables.

Thank you Larry. What gear ratio do you suggest?

what rear tire do you want to run? Anything taller than 26.5” will lower numerically the gear. More gear will mean more RPM on the highway, what is your tolerance for that? 3.08 is a great all around gear.

I have 245/60 on it now. If 26-2800 rpm for a road trip is not considered excessive on the 350 (?)then I’m fine there….

    Then 3.42 would be fine.
